History
editBefore Tung Wah Eastern Hospital, the first Chinese hospital in Wan Chai was a small hospital with only ten beds, named Chi Shan Hospital. It was established through donations from local residents and located on Queen's Road East. In 1911, the hospital was managed by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. Later, to improve medical facilities serving the Chinese community, the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals decided to build Tung Wah Eastern Hospital. However, due to World War I in 1918 and the Seamen's Strike of 1922 and the Canton-Hong Kong Strike in the 1920s, the project was not completed until 1929. The hospital opened on 27 November, presided over by Governor Clementi. The main road leading to it, Eastern Hospital Road, was named after the hospital.
Following the Happy Valley Racecourse fire on 26 February 1918, hundreds of bodies and remains were primarily buried in an abandoned coffee plantation on So Kon Po Hill. The mountain road used to transport the bodies up to the coffee plantation on So Kon Po Hill via the path next to St. Paul's Hospital is now known as Eastern Hospital Road, though it was unnamed at the time. It was only named Eastern Hospital Road after the Tung Wah Eastern Hospital was completed there in 1928.
