Dismiss Yourself is an American independent netlabel primarily focused on experimental music from various internet scenes. It's founder, pseudonymously known as sticki, officially started the label in 2020 after his YouTube channel of the same name attracted artists looking to release music.
Dismiss Yourself's structure has been described as more akin to that of a creative collective than a traditional record label.[1][2]
History
editIn 2017, sticki created the Dismiss Yourself YouTube channel, where he uploaded odd music he found on the internet, often taking the shape of mixes. After three years of relative silence, the channel blew up in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the most viewed videos were recordings of Panchiko's D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L and tomoe_theundying's Rare RCB hexD.mp3.[2]
By mid-2020, Dismiss Yourself has become a center for the microscene of Hex, also known as Surge. In April of that same year, Surge Compilation Vol. 1, the first official release of Dismiss Yourself, was released. What followed were a few releases from non-Surge musicians.[2] According to a close collaborator, the success of Team Mekano's Classic_Project_đ¸000â.â3gp opened the door for reevaluating Dismiss Yourself as a serious record label.[3] In 2021, sticki dropped out of college to focus entirely on running the label.[2]
In 2021, Dismiss Yourself launched Care (stylized in lowercase), a sub-label catering to smaller independent musicians.[2]
