Dhurandhar is an Indian Hindi-language spy action-thriller film series[6][7][8][9][10][11][12] created by Aditya Dhar and produced by Jio Studios and B62 Studios. The films feature Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, Sara Arjun and Rakesh Bedi, alongside several supporting actors. The series focuses on an undercover Indian intelligence agent who infiltrates Lyari's criminal syndicates and political power structures in Karachi, Pakistan in an effort to dismantle the terror network targeting India.
The duology currently ranks 3rd highest-grossing Indian film franchise of all time.[13] It's also the first Indian film series, in which both films crossed the 1000 crore mark.[8]
The first instalment Dhurandhar was released on 5 December 2025 and broke several box-office records, becoming the highest-grossing Hindi film in India, second highest-grossing Hindi film worldwide, 4th highest grossing Indian film and the highest-grossing A-certified Indian film of all-time.[14][15] The second instalment Dhurandhar: The Revenge was released on 19 March 2026.

Dhurandhar
editAfter the hijacking of IC-814 in 1999 and 2001 Indian Parliament attack, IB Chief, Ajay Sanyal devices an indomitable mission to intrude and rupture the terrorist network in Pakistan, by infiltrating the underworld mafia of Karachi. Meanwhile, a 20 year old boy from Punjab held captive for a revenge crime, is identified by Sanyal for the mission. What follows is a network of criminals, informants and operatives whose lives intersect, navigating covert operations, espionage and betrayals.[16]
Dhurandhar: The Revenge
editThe film introduces Jaskirat Singh Rangi, tracing the chain of events that compel him to become Hamza Ali Mazari, and follows his rise as he operates deep inside Lyari's criminal syndicates and political power structures in Karachi while avenging the 26/11 attacks and confronting bigger threats.[17]
Production
editDevelopment
editDhurandhar was officially announced in July 2024 by Aditya Dhar and Ranveer Singh on his social media accounts.[18] The official title Dhurandhar was revealed in December 2024.[19] The film is reportedly inspired by real-life incidents, geopolitical conflicts, and the covert operations of RAW.[20] The plot was loosely based on events revolving around 1999 IC-814 hijacking, the 2001 Indian Parliament attack, the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, Operation Lyari, 2014 Indian general election, 2016 Indian banknote demonetisation and various other events.[21][22][23]
Initially planned as a single film, the makers later decided to make the film a two-part release.[24] Both the parts were shot together concurrently as a single project.[25] The original plan was to release one long film, but the large amount of footage and story complexity led the makers to split it into two parts during post-production process.[26][27]
Aditya Raj Kaul, the senior executive editor at NDTV for geopolitics, national security and strategic affairs, served as the film's research consultant.[22]
Earlier, reports also indicated that the project was initially structured as an OTT web series, however as the script expanded and the scale of action increased, the makers decided the story was better suited for theatres and transformed it into a film. However, the footage was so extensive that it eventually had to be split into two parts.[28][29]
Casting
editMukesh Chhabra was the casting director for the film.[30] In July 2024, Singh was cast as the lead, alongside Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, Akshaye Khanna, and Arjun Rampal.[31][32] In October 2024, Sara Arjun was cast opposite Singh.[33] Singh played the role of a RAW agent, while Madhavan was reported to be playing National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.[34][35] Dutt's character was based on Pakistani police officer Chaudhry Aslam Khan, Khanna's character was based on gangster Rehman Dakait, while Rampal's character was based on Pakistani soldier-turned-terrorist Ilyas Kashmiri and Major Iqbal, the shadowy handler of David Headley.[36][37] Television actors Rakesh Bedi, Saumya Tandon, Manav Gohil, Gaurav Gera, and Naveen Kaushik were cast in significant roles.[38][39]
Singh's character was rumoured to be based on Major Mohit Sharma, an Indian army officer who infiltrated terrorist groups in Kashmir, however this claim was denied by Aditya Dhar.[40][41] Yami Gautam's cameo for second part was confirmed in February 2026.[42]
Filming
editThe first part was shot back-to-back alongside the second one as a single integrated film.[43] Principal photography took place from July 2024 to October 2025 across India and Thailand.[44][45] Several scenes set in Pakistan especially Lyari were re-created in Thailand.[46][47] In India, filming took place across Mumbai,[48][49] Amritsar,[50] Ludhiana,[51] Chandigarh,[52] Ladakh[53] and Kasauli.[54] In Thailand, filming took place in the capital city Bangkok.[55]
Additional shooting for second part also took place in January and February 2026 across Mumbai.[56][57]
