Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center (DPNC) is a nonprofit organization located in Mystic, Connecticut. It was created in 1972[1] and has a natural history museum, a network of hiking trails, a giving garden, and educational spaces. The organization offers environmental education through programs such as public classes and events, homeschool and early childhood education, a nature-based preschool, and field trips.
Locations
edit- Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center: The original site at 109 Pequotsepos Road, Mystic, CT. Contains the natural history museum, live animal exhibits, wildlife rehabilitation, summer camp, educational spaces, and trails.[2] Land is rented from the Denison Society.[1]
- Coogan Farm Nature & Heritage Center: Additional location purchased in 2013 at 162 Greenmanville Avenue, Mystic, CT. Contains preschool, before- and after-school care programs, administrative offices, the Craig Floyd Giving Garden, historic Stillman Foundation, and trails.[2]
- Peace Sanctuary: Located on River Road in Mystic, CT. Owned by the Mary Jobe Akeley Trust and stewarded by DPNC. Includes hiking trails and a scenic overlook over the Mystic River.[3]
- Gungywamp: State-owned property stewarded by DPNC in Groton, CT. Includes stone chambers and artifacts with unknown origin. Gungywamp was designated an archaeological preserve on the State Register of Historic Places in 2022.[3]
- Manatuck Preserve: 205-acre conservation easement stewarded by DPNC, located south of Pine Point School in Stonington, CT.
