Daniel Álvarez Reyes is a Spanish deafblind activist , known for his role in promoting the rights of deafblind people and for defining deafblindness as a distinct disability in Spain and in international contexts.[1] [2][3] [4]
Álvarez Reyes worked for the Organización Nacional de Ciegos Españoles (ONCE), developing educational and communication programs for people with deafblindness. He helped establish the Asociación de Personas Sordociegas de España (ASOCIDE), serving as its Honorary President, and was elected Vice President of the World Federation of the Deafblind (WFDB) at its first General Assembly held in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2001.[5]
He authored the book La sordoceguera. Un análisis multidisciplinar (ONCE, 2004), a foundational text in Spanish-language research on deafblindness.[6]
Álvarez Reyes is also the creator of Dactyls, a tactile communication system that combines elements of the manual alphabet with adapted tactile signs to enable fluent interaction between deafblind individuals and their communication partners. The method integrates dactylology and tactile sign language into a unified structure designed to provide communication that is as rapid and complete as spoken language.[7][8]
