DS Game Maker is a software for Microsoft Windows developed by James Garner that allows users to create their own homebrew videogames and applications for the Nintendo DS.

Development

edit

DS Game Maker was originally developed by James Garner with contributions of other developers between 2007 and 2012. James developed the software when he was only 16 years old

The website and the community remained available until 2016. The latest official version was 5.20, which unlocked all the Pro features making the software completely free.

In 2020, James Garner created a VirtualBox virtual machine of Windows XP with both DS Game Maker 4.9 and 5.12 preinstalled, letting users run these programs on modern operating systems and machines.

In 2022, DigitalDesignDude found the DS Game Maker's source code and released the version 5.21 that introduced some corrections and new features, making optional the use of a virtual machine. Right now, brand new features are in development, like 3D graphics and video playback support, thanks to contributions of the community, especially from Anyzun4age.

Features

edit

DS Game Maker offers a drag & drop based interface, making it easy to use for users without any experience in programming. The software includes up to 50 actions, divided in categories like movement, drawing, text and control over the game structure.

Advanced users can create custom actions using the built-in editor, that allows to write C and DBAS (a BASIC-like programming language designed for the software) code.

The software exports the projects in .NDS files, allowing the executions of games on real Nintendo DS consoles by using a flashcard, or on PC via emulators like NO$GBA.

The games can also played on websites by using embedded DS emulators.
