Development

edit

In March 2024, reports emerged that Rajkumar Periasamy would collaborate with Dhanush for his third directorial venture, following Rangoon (2017) and Amaran (2024). The project was slated to begin after both completed their prior commitments—Amaran for Rajkumar and Kuberaa (2025) for Dhanush.[1] After the success of Amaran, the collaboration was officially announced as Dhanush's 55th film, tentatively titled D55.[2] Anbu Cheliyan's Gopuram Films was initially set to produce the film.[3] However, in November 2025, it was reported that Dhanush's Wunderbar Films had taken over production due to an increase in the film's budget.[4] On 23 January 2026, Wunderbar Films, in association with RTake Studios, formally announced the project.[5] A few days later, Sai Abhyankkar was confirmed as the film's music composer.[6][7] The inclusion of cinematographer Ezhil Arasu K, editor R. Kalaivanan, publicity designer Kabilan Chelliah and art director Rajeevan was announced on 5 February.[8]

Casting

edit

Mammootty was cast in an important role, marking his return to Tamil cinema after eight years since Peranbu (2018), and reuniting with Dhanush after Proprietors: Kammath & Kammath (2013).[9][10] He reportedly received 24 crore (US$2.5 million) as remuneration.[11] Sai Pallavi was approached for the female lead, in her second collaboration with Dhanush following Maari 2 (2018).[12] Sreeleela also joined the cast as the female lead, in her second Tamil film after Parasakthi (2026).[13][14]

Filming

edit

Principal photography began with an inaugural puja ceremony with the film's cast and crew on 4 February 2026 at a film city in Chennai.[15]
