Courtney Pauroso is an American actress and writer known for one-woman shows that incorporate clowning and physical comedy.[1][2] She is the creator and star of the show Vanessa 5000.[3][4][5]

Pauroso performed in "a Los Angeles clown collective nurtured by Philip Burgers (a.k.a. Dr. Brown)" and worked with the Groundlings and the theater company Synetic before doing solo work.[6][7]

Her 2019 show Gutterplum provoked critical attention as one of several performances drawing from clowning traditions.[8][9]

Her performance in the 2023 short film Technical Support won Paris International Short Festival's January 2024 Best Actress in Short award,[10] and Short to the Point International Film Festival's January 2024 Best Leading Actress award.[11]

Pauroso developed Vanessa 5000 in three months of workshop performances in Los Angeles,[12] then performed the show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival,[13] SXSW, and the Netflix is a Joke Festival as well as in London[14][15] before recording it live for Dropout Presents.[16] Vanessa 5000 was a People's Voice Winner for the 2025 Webby Awards[17] and was chosen for the Long List for the 2024 Otherwise Awards.[18] The New York Times named it one of the ten best comedy specials of the year.[19]
