Coloured Voices is a human rights organization that stands for LGBTQ Ugandans.
History
editColoured Voices is a youth-led organization which was founded in 2021 during the COVID-19 lockdown. Their founders found themselves hunted by their relatives due to their LGBTQ+ identity. Getting chased from homes caused them significant socioeconomic difficulties and mental health problems, which motivated them to seek solutions to homophobia and anti-gay propaganda.
The founders , lacking institutional and family support, created a virtual space for mutual support during a period of crisis. This space evolved into a structured social intervention project to contradict stigma and discrimination against the LGBTQ+ people in Uganda.
The group started by holding online meeting to analyze the effects of homophobia in their local communities. Based on this conversation the founders determined that the most effective way to reduce social hostility towards LGBTQ+ Ugandans was to dismantle the narratives of anti-homosexuality movements.
Coloured Voices is based under the foundation that sexual diversity is an inherent factor of human identity, not the result of indoctrination.
Mission
editDue to the hostile socio-political situation regarding LGBTQ+ rights , aggravated by the Ugandan Anti-Homosexuality Act (AHA) [1], the organization advocates and promotes human rights, health and socio- economic well-being for LGBTQ+youth in Uganda and all across the African continent. Today, the foundation focuses its efforts in protecting queer youth while promoting creative arts as tools for expression and empowerment. The organization operates under a distinctive set of guiding principles designed to promote resilience, community and systemic progress. Its institutional culture is rooted in inclusion, equity and transparency, which ensures the generosity and trust towards marginalized people. These principles are a commitment to innovation that defines how the organization addresses complex social challenges.
