Chris Lorenz Fabian (October 12, 2010 – June 22, 2026) was a Filipino student and Senior Boy Scout posthumously recognized for his heroism during the San Jose National High School shooting in Tacloban City. For his bravery, he was posthumously awarded the prestigious Gold Gallantry Heroism Award by the BSP.

Early life and education

edit

Chris Lorenz Tanglao Fabian was born on October 12, 2010, into a Kapampangan family. He traced his ancestral roots to Pampanga, where his father, Christopher Santos Fabian, was a native of Minalin, and his mother, Erbea Tanglao Fabian, hailed from Dau, Mabalacat City. [1] Fabian was the eldest child in his family. Described by his family as an exceptionally kind and thoughtful boy who actively sought out friendships, he was known for sharing his own resources and food money with classmates who were in need.[2]``[3]

Fabian was a passionate Senior Scout and an active member of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) Tacloban City Council.[4] His family later relocated to Leyte, where he enrolled at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City.[2]

Heroism and death

edit

On the morning of June 22, 2026, a mass shooting erupted at San Jose National High School when two armed minors, aged 14 and 15, entered the campus and opened fire.[3] The gunfire resulted in three students being killed and 20 others wounded.[2]

During the chaos, an armed assailant approached Fabian's classroom. Witnesses and surviving classmates later recounted that instead of attempting to flee or hide, the 15-year-old Fabian used his physical frame to barricade and lock the classroom door from the inside.[2] Later, a video surfaced of his bravery.[5] His decisive actions successfully anchored the door shut and blocked the gunmen from entering the room, buying critical seconds that allowed his fellow students and teachers to escape safely through alternative exits.[4] Although he was still conscious when an opportunity to flee arose, he told his classmates to leave him behind.[2] [6]

Legacy and honors

edit

Following his death, Fabian was widely celebrated across the Philippines as a national hero. On June 26, 2026, the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) Leyte Council passed Board Resolution No. 2026-06-012, formally commending his presence of mind and exceptional courage.[3] On June 27, 2026, BSP national leadership posthumously conferred upon him the Gold Gallantry Heroism Award, the organization's highest recognition for life-saving acts of exceptional bravery.[4]

In his home province, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (provincial board) of Pampanga passed Resolution No. 10319, officially declaring Fabian a "Pride of Pampanga."[7] He was also locally honored with dedications by the municipal government of Minalin.[7] A commemorative public billboard honoring his ultimate sacrifice was erected on a pedestrian footbridge along EDSA in Quezon City.

Fabian was laid to rest on June 30, 2026, at the Superior Memorial Gardens in Tacloban City.[2] His funeral was attended by hundreds of grieving family members, friends, and fellow scouts wearing white shirts reading "Justice for Chris Lorenz."[2] His burial concluded with full military rites rendered by soldiers from the Philippine Army's 8th Infantry Division alongside a final Scout salute.[2]
