Chollima on the Wing (in Korean language 천리마 달린다) is a folk song of North Korea.
This song was released in 1966, around the time the First Five-Year Plan ended and the First Seven-Year Plan began. Its lyrics convey that if workers labor diligently, the economy will improve and national reunification can be achieved. However, a reunification with the south was dismissed by the North Korean government in 2023/2024.[1] The music has a fast pace.
Historical and mythological background
editThe musical work was released in 1960 and composed by Kim Gil-hak (김길학) and with lyrics by Nam Eung-son (남응손)[2].
The song features Chollima, a mythological horse that enjoys a high significance in North Korea, due to the Chollima movement. The movement itself was established in the late 1950s and this music title was used to promote the plans of the North Korean government.
Content and style
editThe content focuses on the WPK's Seven-Year plan that needs to be reached fast by riding the Chollima. As visual element, the "hill of communism" is mentioned. The speed of the music reminds of a horse moving in different paces, while accelerating.[3]
