Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is a city in the Indian state of Maharashtra, and the administrative headquarters of its district in the Marathwada region.[1]

Name change

edit

The city was formerly known as Aurangabad. On 17 September 2023, the Government of Maharashtra’s notification renaming Aurangabad to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar came into force after approval by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.[2] The same notification also renamed Osmanabad district as Dharashiv.[3][4][5][6]

The renaming followed decisions taken and approved by the state government in previous cabinet meetings.[7]

Several petitions were filed in the Bombay High Court challenging the renaming, but the court validated the Maharashtra government’s notifications, finding no illegality in the process.[8]
