Charley Lang (born October 24, 1955) is an American actor, director, psychotherapist and professor of psychology.

He was raised in London, England and Wayne, New Jersey, where he made his stage debut in the title role of his high school production of Oliver!. After touring the U.S. and around the world with National Players[2], he received a BFA in Drama from Catholic University[3] in 1978. The following Fall, Lang made his Broadway debut as Young Charlie in the Tony Award-winning production of Da[4] starring Barnard Hughes. Subsequent stage work includes the Broadway productions of Once a Catholic,[5] Mass Appeal,[6] and the 1985 revival of Eugene O'Neill's Strange Interlude.[7]

Television and film

Lang moved to Los Angeles in 1982 to pursue work in TV and film, where his many guest-star roles[8] include Kent State, LA Law, Matlock, Perry Mason, Murder She Wrote, Murphy Brown, The Jamie Foxx Show, Star Trek: The Next Generation, NYPD Blue, ER, and the films Fire in the Sky and Hear No Evil. He was the original Rob Stemkowski on the daytime soap Days of Our Lives.[9] After guesting on The West Wing as Congressman Matt Skinner, Lang pitched an idea involving Log Cabin Republicans[10] to creator Aaron Sorkin, which became a major storyline in the subsequent West Wing episode The Portland Trip.[11]

An LGBT rights activist, Lang produced and directed three award-winning documentary films: Live to Tell: The First Gay & Lesbian Prom in America,[12] Battle for the Tiara,[13] and Gay Cops: Pride Behind the Badge.[14]

Psychology

In 1996 Lang received a master's degree in clinical psychology from Antioch University Los Angeles,[15] becoming a licensed psychotherapist two years later. As professor of psychology at Antioch[16], he created numerous graduate and undergraduate courses, including Madness in American History & Film,[17] Queer Counseling & Narrative Practice,[18] Documentary Film & The American Psyche,[19] and Shakespeare Deconstructed: Gender & Power Play.[20] Lang was for many years Director of the Postmodern Therapy Training Program at the California Family Counseling Center [21]and is co-founder of Narrative Counseling Center,[22] providing support for individuals, couples and families in California.

Published work includes Narrative Therapy Approaches in the Treatment of Trauma[23] for The Therapist Magazine and Narrative Therapy with Couples: Promoting Liberation from Constraining Influences[24] in the Handbook of Couples Therapy, Wiley & Sons.[25]

Personal life

After the repeal of Proposition 8 in California, Lang married his long-time partner Jaymes Mihaliak[26][27] on May 3, 2014, ten years to the day of first meeting.
