Bruna Moura (born 24 April 1994) is a Brazilian cross-country skier who competes internationally under the International Ski Federation (FIS). She represents Brazil in distance and sprint events and became known for her recovery and return to elite competition following a severe traffic accident in 2022.
Biography
editEarly life
editMoura was born in Caraguatatuba, Brazil on 24 April 1994 and is a native of Brazil. Despite coming from a country without a strong tradition in winter sports, she pursued cross-country skiing at a competitive level and later relocated to Europe to further develop her career.[1] She eventually settled in Nunspeet, Netherlands, where she trained and integrated into the local sporting community.[2]
Skiing career
editMoura made her first start in an official FIS competition on 24 July 2015 in Ushuaia, Argentina, where she finished second in a 5 km race. She continued to progress on the international circuit, representing Brazil in multiple competitions sanctioned by the FIS. She debuted at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in 2017 in Lahti, Finland and later made her World Cup debut in March 2021 in Engadin, Switzerland. Her competition history includes starts in distance, sprint, and team events at World Championship and World Cup level.[1]
2022 accident
editIn January 2022, shortly before what would have been her Olympic debut at the Beijing Winter Olympics, Moura was involved in a serious traffic accident in the Italian Alps. The taxi van in which she was travelling collided with a truck, resulting in the death of the driver and leaving Moura with multiple fractures, including broken ribs and a foot injury.[3]
According to Moura, she survived the crash because she was seated in the only part of the vehicle that remained largely intact, having changed seats at the request of her partner shortly before departure. She sustained numerous injuries and was hospitalized before being transferred back to the Netherlands for further treatment.[2]
Following the accident, Moura underwent a lengthy rehabilitation process, including learning to walk again and extensive physiotherapy and psychological support. Her recovery lasted more than a year and was marked by persistent pain and uncertainty about her future in the sport.[4]
Comeback
editDespite these setbacks, Moura returned to international competition and competed at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2023 in Planica, Slovenia, less than a year after the crash. Her comeback was widely covered as an example of resilience in elite sport.[4]
After losing several years of income and competitive momentum due to her injuries, Moura worked outside of sport in the Netherlands, including at a bicycle shop in Nunspeet, to help fund her continued training. Colleagues and supporters organized crowdfunding initiatives to assist her Olympic ambitions.[5]
In January 2026, it was announced that Moura had secured Brazil's final quota place for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan–Cortina, marking her first Olympic participation. She stated that simply becoming an Olympian was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.[3]
Personal life
editMoura lives in Nunspeet, Netherlands and is in a relationship with her partner Pascal. Outside of sport, her interests include fixing mechanical items, working with tools, solving puzzles, and watching television series. Moura speaks Portuguese, English, Spanish, and Dutch, reflecting her international lifestyle.[1]
