Brook Ziporyn is a professor of Chinese philosophy, religion and comparative thought at the University of Chicago.[1] He is notable for his work on Daoism, Neo-Confucianism, and Tiantai Buddhism.
Career
editHe has taught Chinese philosophy and religion at the University of Michigan, Northwestern University, Harvard University, and the National University of Singapore.
His philosophical works have been commended for rehabilitating Tiantai Buddhism, which was often dismissed by prior writers as mystical.[2][3][4]
His 2024 monograph Experiments in Mystical Atheism: Godless Epiphanies from Daoism to Spinoza and Beyond has been the subject of scholarly engagement, noting its original application of Daoism and Tiantai Buddhism to issues in Western monotheism.[5][6][7][8]
The philosopher Gregory S. Moss has described Ziporyn's oeuvre as a "substantive and profound body of work" in which he has developed a "unique form of dialectical thought."[9]
