The Battle of Otes was one of many battles during the Siege of Sarajevo. Goal of this battle was for the VRS to capture Otes and kick ARBiH out of the town. The battle resulted in Serb victory and withdrawal of the Bosniak forces.[1]

The Battle

edit

In the Battle of Otes, Zoran Borovina commanded the Serbian side, while Marinko Pejić commanded the Croat-Muslim side. The battle began at dawn on 1 December 1992. The fighting was very difficult for the VRS in the first two days, as the terrain was an urban environment where every object was difficult to capture. By 4 December, the VRS had made significant territorial gains and crushed the ARBiH and HVO defense line. During the evening fighting that day, Commander Borovina and several volunteers carried out a sabotage raid on enemy positions. During the action, a hand grenade was thrown among his fighters, which Colonel Borovina tried to return, in the process it exploded in his right hand. The body of Commander Borovina was taken by his soldiers to the Žiča war hospital in Blažuj, where he was pronounced dead at around 8 PM. by surgeon Miodrag Lazić. On the morning of December 5, 1992, the fighting for Otes ended and this Sarajevo settlement fell completely under the control of the Army of Republika Srpska. In honor of Colonel Zoran Borovina, Otes was renamed Zoranovo on the same day, a name it bore until the exodus in 1996.[1][2]

Aftermath

edit

After the Battle of Otes, the Battle of Azići was launched, which had the same result, a victory for the Army of Republika Srpska
