Barona is part of the Bravedo Group. Bravedo Oy is Barona's largest shareholder, and the majority owners of Bravedo are its executive management and other employees. [3]
History
editThe company was founded in 1999 by Markus Oksa and Mikko Leppänen. Its business initially focused on meeting the labour needs of the construction industry in the Ostrobothnia region, but it soon expanded into other sectors.
Barona has also sought to address labour shortages across various industries by recruiting internationally. The company began recruiting workers from the Philippines in the early 2000s.[4][5]
In the winter of 2025–2026, Barona's founder Markus Oksa returned as the company's Chief Executive Officer. In December 2025, the parent company Bravedo also strengthened its ownership base when the mutual pension insurance company Ilmarinen acquired shares in Bravedo as a new investor, and the mutual pension insurance company Elo increased its ownership stake. At the same time, Bravedo increased its ownership interest in the accommodation provider Forenom to more than 50%.[6][7]
