Atlas Disposal Industries is a waste disposal company based in Rancho Cordova, California.[1] It was founded on March 30, 1998 by a group of property owners in response to new recycling mandates passed by the State of California. It is one of the largest waste management and recycling service providers in Sacramento, California. Their services include disposal of both trash and recycling on a commercial, industrial, and residential scale as well as providing temporary containers and dumpsters.[2] The company's subsidiary, ReFuel Energy Partners, also operates three compressed natural gas refueling stations.[3]
Atlas Disposal operates in three states including California, Arizona, and Utah.
History
editThe company was founded on March 30, 1998.[4]
In 2007, Atlas Disposal became the first private fleet in the greater Sacramento area to adopt compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. In 2011, the company launched its compost collection system to commercial and residential areas. Participants of this program included local schools, grocery stores, restaurants, and other businesses.[5] By 2011, Atlas Disposal's fleet consisted of 25% CNG vehicles.[6]
By May 2012, Atlas Disposal's CNG fleet had grown large enough to support a dedicated fueling station, leading to the establishment of ReFuel Energy Partners, a subsidiary. In joint partnership with Clean World Partners, ReFuel developed the first fueling station in North America to utilize anaerobic digestion (AD) to create renewable natural gas (RNG) for transportation fuel. The commercial-scale AD system was designed to convert 25 tons of food waste per day into renewable natural gas.[7] Later in 2013, the facility expanded its operations to allow for its capacity to increase to 100 tons per day.[8][9]
In 2013, Atlas Disposal partook in Sacramento, California's inaugural Farm-to-Fork Week. The company supported the event's zero-waste initiative which aimed to demonstrate a closed-loop model where food was grown, consumed, and disposed locally. Waste was collected and converted to RNG for Atlas's CNG fleet.[10][11]
In September 2018, the company expanded its operations to Salt Lake City, Utah and establishing itself outside of California for the first time. The Utah location served as a regional headquarters and continued to grow across the Wasatch Front. Atlas Disposal then expanded to Phoenix, Arizona in December of 2021 through the acquisition of Pyramid Services.[1]
In November 2024, Atlas Disposal acquired a 4.83-acre industrial site in Rancho Cordova with a 7,000 square-foot warehouse in preparation for expanded operations within the city.[12] On January 1, 2025, the City of Rancho Cordova, California contracted its residential garbage, recycling, and street sweeping services to Atlas Disposal under a 10-year contract.[13] Atlas Disposal was selected from four competing proposals submitted during a competitive procurement process.
Later that year on April 23, 2025, Dave Sikich, who had served as President for the company up until that point, transitioned into the role of Vice President with Brian Waters appointed as its new President and Chief Executive officer.[14] Brian Waters had served as Chief Executive Officer at the company since 2021.[15]
