Asia Web3 Alliance Japan (AWAJ) is a Japanese industry association, incorporated as a general incorporated association (一般社団法人), that works to connect the Web3 and blockchain ecosystems of Asia with the Japanese market. Founded in 2023, the association is led by chief executive officer Hinza Asif.[1]
History
editAWAJ was founded in 2023 with a board composed of international and Japanese members from the Web3 industry.[1] At its first press conference in December 2023, the association outlined plans to expand international participation in Japan and Asia's Web3 ecosystem and launched a stablecoin subcommittee.[1]
In March 2025, AWAJ submitted a proposal to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's Crypto Task Force and Commissioner Hester Peirce calling for a strategic U.S.–Japan partnership on tokenization and Web3 regulatory innovation, including common classification of tokenized securities and frameworks for cross-border token trading and custody.[2] The following month, AWAJ held a strategic dialogue with the Crypto Task Force on cross-border digital asset regulation.[3]
In October 2025, AWAJ organized a "Japan Hub" exhibition booth bringing together seven Japanese companies at the TOKEN2049 conference in Singapore, and hosted networking and pitch events around the conference, including a networking event supported by JETRO's Singapore office.[4]
In June 2026, after Japan's lower house of the National Diet passed legislation reclassifying crypto assets as financial instruments, AWAJ president Hinza Asif told Bloomberg News that stronger enforcement measures could help build a more trusted environment for market participants.[5]
Programs
editAWAJ operates Web3 Salon, an initiative run in collaboration with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) to support the growth and international expansion of Japanese Web3 startups by connecting them with venture capitalists, institutional investors, and partner companies.[6] In June 2025, Ripple partnered with Web3 Salon to provide grants to Japanese startups building on the XRP Ledger in areas including decentralized finance, tokenization of real-world assets, and digital payments.[7]
In December 2025, AWAJ and Web3 Salon launched the Japan Financial Infrastructure Innovation Program (JFIIP), an accelerator for startups developing regulated digital-finance solutions, with Mizuho Bank, SMBC Nikko Securities, Securitize Japan, and HIRAC FUND participating as partners. The program concluded with a JETRO-hosted demo day during Japan Fintech Week 2026.[8][9]
