Anwa Clay , is a sibling company to Angels Sky . Anwa is a claymation and animation company based in Macau SAR China, the company was founded in June 2022 by Angela Lao and Lucy Sao Wa Iao, a mother and daughter duo with experience of Clay doll figures and 2d animation and they have worked together since they founded Angels Sky in 2007.[1]
While the main business is mostly animation with both 2d and Clay animation for film and they are also creators of Clay figure in the market. With selling over 1,374 works, including clay pets, clay dolls, claymations and clay-themed books.[2]
Angels Sky in the 2000s & 2010s
editIn 2007 Angela founded a licensed art and education company “Angels Sky” in Macau, which was originally a studio. She was only a teenager and ran her own learning centre, teaching kids art and English. Most clay works are crafted by her mother and painted by Angela herself, both self-described animation and anime fans who use their passion and own respective specialties to create works with a unique cartoon style, featuring various types of cartoons and their own abstract styles. Their projects are about pets and children-themed works mainly comprising pets and their owners, zodiac figures, Macau scenery and miniatures. Their claymations, as well as their books, are based on true stories between pets and owners, love stories and some educational stories for children.[3]
In 2011, Angels Sky debuted their three series of animation shorts titled The Stories of Dream Village, part 1 Vase Girl, part 2 Grandma Ma, and part 3 The Princess. They were released in 2013 and in 2016 The Stories of Dream Village was awarded internationally at Hollywood International Moving Pictures Film Festival, Winner in Official Selection and at Hollywood Boulevard Film Festival, Winner of Best Animation Feature and Official Selection.[4]
In 2016 Angels Sky continued success with a Webisodic series titled CaCa: Tell You Jokes! The series won the “Award of Recognition” in the Hollywood International Moving Pictures Film Festival (HIMPFF) in its May 2016 competition series.[5] The series has 3 seasons and the story is about Angel who lives in a small city, Macau. Caca is her motivation to study, work, and dream. Love, sorrow, and humor link everyone in this century of networks. [6]
In 2019 Angela created Andrew’s Parallel Worlds series, a 2d animation adventure that is about a boy character named Andrew who is similar to Angela herself but as a boy in a parallel world. The first short film with Andrew Desireland, Multiverse was premiered at LA Shorts Awards Best Short Film, other films notable are Olympic of the Universe, None Quarantined in Dreamland! [7]
Anwa Clay in the 2020s
editJune 4, 2022, Angels Sky became Anwa Clay, Anwa is a mix of the names of the two Angela and Sao Wa. The company also increased with 4 people. Angela Lao the director and editor, Lucy Sao Wa Iao the chairman and producer, Anson the musician, and Johan Karlberg the voice actor. The animation was changed from 2d to Clay and Dolls, later in the mid 2020s with a little use of Ai.
In early 2025, team Anwa Clay was awarded as honourable mention in Slamdance Film Festival in Los Angeles with one of their claymation short film Never Fall in Love. [8]
At present Anwa Clay is continuing making claymation films and also selling their dolls at the market and is considered one of their strongest creators from Macau. <ref>"Macao Daily News". Macao Daily News.
