Amarendra Baahubali is a fictional character and one of the main protoganists of the Baahubali franchise alongside his son Mahendra Baahubali. The character was created by V. Vijayendra Prasad and SS Rajamouli and was portrayed by Prabhas who also portrayed his son in Baahubali The Beginning and Baahubali The Conclusion. This character is considered to be one of the most iconic characters in Indian Cinema and Prabhas received universal acclaim for his performance[1]. SS Rajamouli considers this character to be the most innocent character in the franchise as he does not realize that his members are plotting to kill him until his death at the hands of his mentor and friend Kattappa whom he affectionately calls uncle[2]. The character has appeared in numerous cartoon shows such as Baahubali: The Legend Legends and Baahubali: The Crown Blood, and the character is also expected to appear in the animated film Baahubali: The Eternal War Part 1 in which Prabhas will be voicing him in the telugu version.
Fictional background
editEarly Life
editAmarendra Baahubali was born to king Vikramadeva and his wife Akhila but his father died before he was born and his mother died whilst giving birth to him. He was raised by his paternal uncle Bijjaladeva's wife Sivagami who saves him as an infant from disloyal soldiers of Vikramadeva who tried to take over the throne and Sivagami even kills the main culprit behind the scheme and she considers Amarendra to be her own son alongside her biological son Bhallaladeva. Since he was a child Amarendra Baahubali is loved by the people and soldiers such as Kattappa in Mahishmati who admire him for his kindness and good nature and even Sivagami likes him more than Bhallaladeva as Amarendra Baahubali reflects the values she admires and even shares a strong bond with him. Whilst his cousin brother Bhallaladeva hates him and often plots with his father Bijjaladeva to kill him. When Baahubali and Bhallaladeva grow older, tension rises in Mahishmati on who is going to be the next king as they are both equally skilled and Sivagami and Bijjaladeva decide to hold a contest to determine who should be made the next king of Mahishmati. They declare the contest to be that whoever protects the Mahishmati empire from the Kalakeyas will be made the king. During the battle Baahubali manages to defeat Inkoshi and is about to kill him the way Sivagami wanted to but Bhallaladeva manages to kill him by striking him in the back of his head with his mace from behind. Even though Bhallaladeva killed Inkoshi Sivagami announces Baahubali to be the next king as he saved more lives and exhibited more leadership qualities during the battle much to Bijjaladeva's dismay. Baahubali is then told by Sivagami to visit neighboring states with Kattappa and he first visits the Kuntala kingdom where he falls in love with the princess Devasena whom he helps save her kingdom from the Pindari tribe with the help of Kattappa and Devasena's brother's brother in law Kumara Varma. Baahubali then takes Devasena to Mahishmati after receiving a letter from Sivagami stating that she needs to be brought to Mahishmati to be wedded to her son. Amarendra and Kattapa thinking Sivagami meant Amarendra bring Baahubali to Mahishmati only to learn that Sivagami was trying to wed Devasena to Bhallaladeva. A Furious Devasena lashes out at Sivagami and Amarendra Baahubali stands by her side telling Sivagami that it was her fault for trying to wed Devasena to Bhallaladeva without her consent. This strains Amarendra Baahubali's relationship with Sivagami as Bijjaladeva then manipulates Sivagami into declaring Bhallaladeva to be the next king and Amarendra Baahubali to be the commander in chief of Mahishmati. During the coronation the people in Mahishmati start revolting as they refuse to accept Bhallaladeva as the next king of Mahishmati and want Baahubali to be the next king but Baahubali tells them that he will protect their honor and lives even at the cost of his own while still being the commander in chief. Amarendra Baahubali's relationship with Sivagami becomes more strained after his marriage with Devasena, during her Baby shower, Bhallaladeva announces Sethupathy to be the commmander of the chief replacing Amarendra Baahubali which causes Devasena to lash out at Sivagami.
Exile
editDevasena during her visit to the temple sees Sethupathy touching the women there and when he tries to touch Devasena, Devasena cuts his fingers, and is brought to the Mahishmati. Sethupathy accuses her of unlawfully trying to cutting his fingers and Amarendra arrives to hear the judgement and asks Devasena on what happened who boldly answers him and when he asks Sethupathy the same thing, he begins shivering and Baahubali kills him by beheading with his sword. This infuriates Bhallaladeva and Sivagami who accuse him and Devasena of breaking the laws of Mahishmati. Sivagami then orders Baahubali and Sivagami to be banished from the kingdom and the people warmly welcome them in and Baahubali helps them with basic necessities with the help of Kumara Varma.
Death
editBhallaladeva and Bijjaladeva plot to kill Amarendra Baahubali as his fame becomes even stronger whilst living with the people. They use Kumara Varma as a bait by having Bijjaladeva manipulate Kumara Varma into intruding into the kingdom in order to save Amarendra, Devasena, and their unborn child from Bhallaladeva, Kumara Varma intrudes into the kingdom with his men and they are killed by Bhallaladeva's men but Kumara Varma manages to kill Bhallaladeva's men only to be killed by Bijjaladeva. Bijjaladeva and Bhallaladeva then manipulate the heartbroken Sivagami into thinking that Kumara Varma intruded into the kingdom on the orders of Baahubali to kill Bhallaladeva, she then approves Bhallaladeva to Baahubali not through his hands but through Kattappa whom Bhallaladeva orders to kill Baahubali. Kattappa at first refuses to but Sivagami warns him that if he does not kill Amarendra, she would and Kattappa mournfully tells Sivagami that he will do it himself.
Bound by oath to serve the kingdom, Kattappa helplessly lures Amarendra to a secluded forest place by having his soldiers tie him up there on the context that Kattappa had committed a betrayal. Amarendra rushes to save Katappa after hearing about Kattappa getting tied up due to committing a betrayal from a villager and leaves the pregnant Devasena with the people. When Amarendra goes to save Kattappa, a devastated Kattappa tells him to leave but Amarendra refuses to do so. Then they are attacked by The Kalakeya king Inokshi's brother and his men who surround them but Amarendra and Kattappa manage to kill them only for unwilling Kattappa to mournfully stab Baahubali in the back. Amarendra Baahubali shocked calls Kattappa uncle and Kattappa reveals to him that Bhallaladeva had ordered his death. A dying Baahubali requests Kattappa to take care of Sivagami and screams Long Live Mahishmati before dying. Bhallaladeva then comes to check if Kattappa had killed Baahubali and proceeds to mutilate his dead body and reveals that he had manipulated Sivagami into ordering Kattappa to kill him as Kattappa watches. It is unknown what happened to Amarendra Baahubali's body after but in a scene in Baahubali: The Epic Bijjaladeva reveals that his body was burned to ashes by the fire which occurred when Baahubali fought against Inkoshi's brother and that his ashes flew into the river.[3]
Legacy
editKattappa who was listening to Bhallaladeva rant about how he manipulated Sivagami then reveals the truth to the grieving Sivagami who asks a saddened Devasena for forgiveness and announces her infant son Mahendra Baahuubali to be the next king of Mahishmati and orders Kattappa to have Bhallaladeva be hanged. Bhallaladeva with the support of his guards and father attempt to kill Sivagami and the infant Mahendra Baahubali but they fail to even when Bhallaladeva shoots an arrow behind Sivagami's back causing her and Mahendra to fall into the river but Sivagami manages to save Mahendra Baahubali at the cost of her own life as she drowns in the river due to the water level rising. Bhallaladeva then rules mahishmati for the next twenty five years with an iron fist and has Devasena tied up in a cage and even orders her kingdom Kuntali to be burned with only a few survivors such as Devasena's brother Jaya Varma who later forms a rebellion to fight Bhallaladeva in order to avenge Amarendra Baahubali's death and rescue Devasena who still has hope that her son is still alive and will one day rescue her. Twenty five years pass when Mahendra Baahubali rescues Devasena and meets Kattappa who reveals the truth to him about his heritage. Amarendra Baahubali's death is avenged when Mahendra Baahubali defeats Bhallaladeva in a duel and Devasena burns him alive. Mahendra Baahubali then becomes the next king of Mahishmati and promises that he will protect the people's honor and lives just like his father and grandmother once did.
Afterlife
editAmarendra Baahubali is expected to return in Baahubali: The Eternal War Part 1 in the teaser in which he will serve Lord Shiva in the afterlife after his death and will face Lord Indra.[4]
Reception
editAmarendra Baahubali was a great warrior who cared about his people and the people closest to him more than his own life. Amarendra is also shown to be very empathetic as he cares about his people's wishes and tries to fulfill them in any way he can unlike his cousin Bhallaladeva and uncle Bijjaladeva who hates him due to Amarendra's father Vikramadeva who was the younger brother of Bijjaladeva and was made the king instead of Bijjaladeva. Amarandra knows that his uncle despises him but he holds no hatred and cares about his uncle and cousin whom he does not know hates him and even tried to kill him in Baahubali: The Beginnining in a scene where Baahubali was trying to capture the culprit who revealed the secrets of Mahishmati to the Kalakeyas and Bhallaldeva tried to let go of the rope which was holding Amarendra and the culprit only to stop when he sees Kattappa approaching. Amarendra Baahubali eventually learns that Bhallaladeva hated him in Baahubali: The Conclusion, when Kattappa reveals to him that Bhallaladeva had ordered him to kill him and in his dying moments Amarendra Baahubali held no hatred towards Bhallaladeva or Kattappa and only requests Kattappa to take care of Sivagami. Even though Amarebdra Baahubali was never officially crowned the king of Mahishmati, the people and soldiers consider him to be a king until his death. Amarendra Baahubali is considered to be one of the most well written characters in the story and one of the greatest characters in indian cinema. [5]. Many audiences were shocked after the release of Baahubali: The Beginning, due to its ending in which Kattappa revealed that he killed Baahubali, many memes and theories were posted online as to why Kattappa killed Baahubali.[6][7]. Many audiences were satisfied with the answer in Baahubali: The Conclusion
