Draft:Allen Career Institute

Allen Career Institute is an Indian test-preparation and coaching company headquartered in Kota, Rajasthan. The institute provides coaching for engineering entrance examinations, medical entrance examinations, Olympiads, school-level competitive examinations and board examinations. Allen is closely associated with Kota's coaching industry, which has developed as a major centre for students preparing for competitive examinations in India.[1][2]

History

edit

Allen Career Institute was founded in April 1988 in Kota, Rajasthan, by Rajesh Maheshwari. According to Moneycontrol, the institute began from the Maheshwari family's house with eight students and initially offered Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics coaching under one roof.[3]

The institute later expanded under the Maheshwari family. Forbes India described Allen as a family-led coaching enterprise that grew out of Kota and later planned wider expansion.[4]

Allen grew alongside Kota's emergence as a coaching hub for engineering and medical entrance examination preparation. Media reports have described the institute as one of the major coaching organisations in Kota's test-preparation ecosystem.[5][6]

Courses and programmes

edit

Allen Career Institute offers coaching for examinations including JEE Main, JEE Advanced, NEET-UG, Olympiads and school-level examinations. Its programmes include classroom courses, foundation courses, distance learning and online learning options.[7]

The institute's academic model has generally included classroom teaching, periodic tests, study material, performance analysis and doubt-solving support.

Expansion

edit

From its original base in Kota, Allen expanded to multiple cities in India and selected locations outside India. In 2022, TechCrunch reported that Allen operated 138 classroom centres across 46 cities in India and the Middle East.[8]

Investment by Bodhi Tree Systems

edit

In May 2022, Bodhi Tree Systems, an investment platform backed by James Murdoch and Uday Shankar, announced a strategic investment of US$600 million in Allen Career Institute.[9]

Mint reported that Bodhi Tree acquired a minority stake in Allen and that the investment valued the test-preparation business at more than US$1 billion. The report also stated that the founding Maheshwari family retained control of the company.[10]

VCCircle also reported that the deal involved a minority stake and was intended to support Allen's expansion.[11]

Online education

edit

Allen has expanded into digital and hybrid learning formats. Its online offerings include preparation programmes for JEE, NEET and school-level competitive examinations.[12]

The 2022 Bodhi Tree investment was reported to support Allen's digital education plans and expansion beyond its traditional classroom coaching model.[13]

Results

edit

Allen students have been reported among top rank holders in Indian engineering and medical entrance examinations. In 2025, The Times of India reported that Allen claimed 46 students in the Top 100 of JEE Advanced 2025, including students among the Top 10.[14]

In the same year, The Times of India reported that Allen claimed 39 students in the Top 100 of NEET-UG 2025, including four students in the Top 10.[15]

Concerns and controversies

edit

Allen Career Institute has been mentioned in media coverage related to wider concerns about Kota's coaching ecosystem, particularly student mental health and academic pressure.

In December 2022, ThePrint reported that three students preparing for entrance examinations died by suicide in Kota and that police said the students were enrolled at Allen Career Institute. The report stated that police were investigating the circumstances of the deaths.[16]

Scroll.in also reported the incident, stating that the students were enrolled at Allen Career Institute.[17]

The broader Kota coaching industry has faced scrutiny over student suicides, academic stress and the pressure associated with preparation for competitive examinations. The Guardian reported in 2023 that student suicides in Kota had drawn attention to the demanding culture of entrance-exam preparation in the city.[18]

In April 2024, The Economic Times reported that Allen Career Institute had cut around 60 to 70 jobs from the sales department of Allen NExT, its medical test-preparation wing. The report also mentioned user concerns related to app functioning and course content.[19]

In fiscal year 2025, The Economic Times reported that Allen Career Institute's net profit fell sharply to Rs 41 crore despite relatively steady revenue. The report linked the decline to investments in digital platforms, new centres, hiring and expansion beyond the traditional Kota base.[20]
