Alclair Audio Co. (branded as Alclair) is an American manufacturer of custom and universal-fit in-ear monitors (IEMs), hearing protection, and related audio products. The company is a division of Matrics Inc., a Minnesota-based hearing health company with more than 60 years of experience in the audiology and hearing care industries. Alclair designs and manufactures all products in the United States, with its primary facility in Osseo, Minnesota and a secondary location in Nashville, Tennessee.[1]
Alclair serves professional touring musicians, studio engineers, worship teams, audiophiles, hunters, sport shooters, motorcyclists, and broadcast and security professionals. Its product lines span from custom acrylic in-ear monitors to active electronic hearing protection and occupational earpieces.[2]
History
editAlclair was established in 2009 as a custom in-ear monitor brand operating under Matrics Inc., a company with roots in the hearing health industry dating back more than six decades. Matrics has historically developed and manufactured impression materials used by audiologists worldwide for producing ear impressions, providing Alclair with deep expertise in ear anatomy and custom fitting.[3]
The company expanded from its Minneapolis-area headquarters to open a second location at Rock Nashville / Soundcheck in Nashville, Tennessee, placing it in close proximity to Nashville's professional music community.[4]
In addition to in-ear monitors, Alclair has expanded its product portfolio to include hearing protection for hunters and shooters under the Alclair Outdoors sub-brand, motorsports earphones and earplugs under the Alclair MOTO line, and professional interruptible foldback (IFB) earpieces for broadcast and security applications.[5]
Products
editCustom In-Ear Monitors
editAlclair's custom in-ear monitors are manufactured using ear impressions or 3D ear scans submitted by the customer. The company works with any licensed audiologist or hearing aid center to take impressions. All custom monitors are fabricated in-house in the United States and are available with a range of color, artwork, and shell material options through an online designer tool.[6]
Alclair custom IEMs use balanced armature drivers — small, efficient transducers originally developed for hearing aid applications — arranged in crossover networks within a custom-molded acrylic shell. Alclair was the first manufacturer to use electrostatic drivers in a custom in-ear monitor. The number and configuration of drivers directly affects the frequency response, soundstage, headroom, and overall sonic character of each model.
Venue Series
editThe Venue Series is Alclair's line of custom in-ear monitors designed for working musicians, weekend warriors, indie bands, and church worship teams. This line spans from dual-driver configurations to six-driver designs. Models in the Venue Series are optimized for live stage performance, with tuning decisions tailored to match the needs of stage musicians and front-of-house engineers. As of 2026, the Venue Series includes the following models:[7]

| ESM | 13 | $2,499 | Thirteen driver; top of the Alclair line; maximum driver count and frequency extension with high headroom and immersive clarity |
The ICON (Nine Driver) is Alclair's penultimate stage performance monitor. Its nine-driver configuration is tuned with a gentle upper-end contour designed to bring vocals and guitar leads forward in a mix without harshness or listener fatigue. The low end is described as punchy and articulate rather than heavy, and the ICON is noted for exceptional headroom, allowing bass players and drummers to push low-frequency levels without distortion. It is positioned for demanding touring professionals who require a monitor that can perform across virtually every stage role.[9]
The Horizon occupies a distinct position within the Prestige Series as the company's reference studio monitor. Although it uses four drivers — fewer than several other Prestige models — it is tuned for flat, accurate reproduction rather than stage enhancement. Alclair describes it as designed to present an almost clinically balanced mix without added color, targeting mastering engineers, record producers, and audiophiles who require uncolored playback.[10]
The ESM (Thirteen Driver) is the company's flagship by driver count, offering 9 balanced armature drivers and 4 electrostatic drivers per ear, for a total of 13 drivers. It has a reported frequency response extending beyond the range of human hearing.
Universal Fit In-Ear Monitors
editAlclair offers a line of universal-fit in-ear monitors (marketed as the UV Series) that ship with interchangeable ear tips and do not require custom impressions. These models are designed and manufactured in the United States to the same standards as Alclair's custom line, using the same balanced armature driver technology.[11]
| Model | Drivers | MSRP (USD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| UV1 | 1 | $149 | Single driver; entry point to Alclair's USA-made line |
| UV2 | 2 | $299 | Dual driver; flat and accurate for wide range of uses |
| UV3 | 3 | $399 | Triple driver; Alclair's most popular universal model |
Hearing Protection
editAlclair produces a range of hearing protection products sold through both its main audio channel and the Alclair Outdoors sub-brand. All hearing protection products use custom ear impressions or scans for a precise fit.
Active (Electronic) Hearing Protection
editThe EXP Pro is Alclair's flagship electronic hearing protection product. It uses active amplification to enhance ambient sound at safe levels while electronically suppressing loud impulse sounds — such as gunshots — in real time. This allows hunters and shooters to hear conversation and ambient sounds while being protected from hearing-damaging impulses. The EXP Pro retails at $1,099 and is fitted using custom ear impressions.[12]
Passive Earplugs
editAlclair's passive hearing protection line includes several configurations of custom-fit earplugs using acoustic filters to reduce sound while still allowing users to hear their environment. The filters bring harmful volume levels down, making concerts, hunting, and motorcycle trips more enjoyable and safer. For hunters and shooters, Alclair's Impact Defense™ technology blocks harmful impulse sounds while allowing ambient sound to pass through. Models include full-ear and canal-fit styles offered in sport shooting, musician/concert, and general-purpose variants. Passive products use custom silicone or hard acrylic shells and retail from $99 to $249.[13]
Products in the passive line include:
- Shooting Sports Ear Protection (full-ear, Impact Defense filters)
- Canal Fit Musician and Concert Earplugs (filtered)
- Full Ear Musician and Concert Earplugs (filtered)
- Motorcycle and Moto Sports Filtered Earplugs
- Sleeping Earplugs (canal-fit, low-profile)
- Custom Hearing Protection (silicone, solid block)
- Hard Shell Acrylic Custom Earplugs
Alclair Outdoors
editAlclair Outdoors is a sub-brand targeting hunters, sport shooters, and outdoor enthusiasts. It is operated through a dedicated social media presence (@alclairoutdoors) and focuses on hearing protection products positioned at the intersection of high-quality sound design and field use. The line's primary products are the EXP Pro active hearing protection and the Impact Defense passive earplug family.[14]
Alclair MOTO
editAlclair MOTO is the company's motorsports-focused line, serving motorcycle riders, snowmobilers, and other powersports enthusiasts. The primary product in this line is the MOTO Earphone, a custom in-ear monitor designed to fit inside a motorcycle helmet and provide music or communication audio while attenuating wind and road noise. The MOTO Earphone retails at $499 and is manufactured using custom ear impressions.[15]
The MOTO line also includes passive filtered earplugs without audio capability, designed specifically to reduce wind noise while maintaining situational awareness at speed. This model reduces road fatigue while still allowing riders to remain aware of their surroundings.
Broadcast
editAlclair produces two IFB (Interruptible Foldback) earpieces under the proQ brand name, primarily serving television broadcasters, live event production, and broadcast journalism professionals. IFB earpieces allow on-air talent and production personnel to receive audio feeds from a director or producer through a single ear while remaining on camera or in a live environment.[16]
| Model | Drivers | MSRP (USD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| proQ IFB Earpiece | 1 | $249–$299 | Single driver; custom-fit IFB earpiece for broadcast and production |
| proQ Duo IFB Earpiece | 2 | $299–$349 | Dual driver; enhanced clarity for demanding broadcast and intercom applications |
Security
editAlclair produces a Custom Security Earpiece for law enforcement, private security, and event security professionals. The earpiece is constructed with a hard clear acrylic shell for discreet wear and is fitted to custom impressions. It is designed for use with radio communication systems common in security and public safety applications, and retails at $100.[17]
Technologies
editAlclair has developed and introduced several proprietary and industry-first technologies across its custom in-ear monitor and hearing protection product lines.
Electrostatic Drivers
editAlclair introduced the first custom in-ear monitor to feature electrostatic drivers with the launch of the Electro. Electrostatic drivers operate on a different acoustic principle than traditional balanced armature drivers: a thin, electrically charged diaphragm is suspended between two conductive plates, and audio signal voltage causes the diaphragm to move, producing sound. This mechanism results in extremely low mass and near-instantaneous transient response, yielding high-frequency reproduction that conventional drivers cannot match in detail and air.[18]
Alclair's implementation is also notable for a second engineering milestone: the Electro is the first headphone of any kind to power its electrostatic drivers using an internal step-up transformer built into the monitor shell itself. Prior electrostatic headphone designs required a separate external energizer unit, making them impractical for stage use. By integrating the transformer into the IEM body, Alclair made electrostatic driver technology viable in a live performance environment for the first time.[18]
The Electro combines four balanced armature drivers with a dual electrostatic tweeter, for a total of six drivers per ear. Electrostatic driver technology subsequently appeared in the ESM Thirteen Driver, which incorporates four electrostatic drivers alongside nine balanced armature drivers.
Impact Defense™
editImpact Defense™ is Alclair's proprietary filter technology used across its passive hearing protection line and as the acoustic foundation of the active EXP Pro. The technology is designed to attenuate harmful transient sounds — such as gunshots, industrial impacts, or sudden stage volume spikes — while preserving the listener's ability to hear ambient sound and conversation at safe levels.[19]
In the passive earplug line, Impact Defense filters are installed in both full-ear and canal-fit shell configurations. The filters are field-replaceable. In the active EXP Pro, Impact Defense is implemented electronically: microphones pick up ambient sound, amplify it at safe levels, and electronically suppress impulse sounds in real time, allowing hunters and shooters to hear their environment naturally until a harmful transient is detected.
HD Resolution
editSeveral Alclair monitors extend their frequency response well beyond 20 kHz, the conventional upper limit of human hearing. Alclair refers to this capability as HD Resolution. The company positions extended high-frequency response not as an audibility feature in isolation, but as a contributor to improved transient accuracy, imaging precision, and perceived air and space in a mix or recording.[20]
Products with HD Resolution capability include the RSM (Quad Driver), the Electro (Six Driver), and the Horizon (Quad Driver Reference Monitor). In each case, the extended response is primarily driven by dedicated high-frequency balanced armature drivers or, in the Electro's case, the dual electrostatic tweeter array.
SureFit Guarantee
editThe SureFit Guarantee is Alclair's customer fit assurance program. Because custom in-ear monitors are manufactured from ear impressions, fit quality is critically dependent on the accuracy of the impression itself — a variable outside the company's direct control. Under the SureFit Guarantee, Alclair works directly with customers to verify and correct fit issues after delivery, including remanufacturing shells when a fit problem is traced to impression quality rather than customer anatomy changes.[21]
The program reflects the company's broader customer service positioning and its background in professional audiology and hearing aid fitting, where precise fit is a clinical requirement rather than a preference.
