Aiden John Burnett (born 6 August 1997), frequently known by his nickname "Bhanya", is a Zimbabwean international rugby union player who plays as a Number 8 or flanker for English National League 1 side Rams RFC and serves as the vice-captain for the Zimbabwe national rugby union team (the Sables). Standing at 1.88 metres and weighing 105 kg, he is widely regarded as a physical loose-forward anchor noted for his robust carrying lines and breakdown leadership.[1]

Early life and education

Burnett was born on 6 August 1997 in Zimbabwe. He attended lower youth academy training frameworks in South Africa before relocating to the United Kingdom for higher education, completing an elite player pathway program at the Gloucester Academy. He later completed his university studies at Hartpury University, competing in the top-tier Super BUCS university rugby competition.[2]

Club career

Burnett began his senior domestic exposure in 2019, playing for the Zimbabwe Academy in the SuperSport Rugby Challenge. While residing in England, he represented Hartpury University RFC in National League 1 and the RFU Championship tiers. He briefly returned to the top-tier domestic Zimbabwean club setup to play for the Old Hararians, where he captained regional selections. In 2024, Burnett signed with Reading-based club Rams RFC, solidifying his role within the English national leagues.

International career

Burnett made his senior international debut for the Zimbabwe Sables in 2022. Known for his tactical flexibility across the back-row, he quickly rose through the leadership ranks to be appointed vice-captain of the national team. He played an instrumental role in guiding Zimbabwe to historic title victories at the 2024 Rugby Africa Cup, which laid down the foundational pathway for Zimbabwe's subsequent qualification for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. In June 2026, he was named by Head Coach Pieter Benade to the traveling 33-man national squad for the World Rugby Nations Cup tournament in the United States.[3]
