Agnishwar Jayaprakash (born 4 August 1990), is an Indian entrepreneur, former competitive swimmer, and technology innovator. He is the founder and CEO of Garuda Aerospace, an Indian drone technology company. He is also the founder of Agni Foundation, a social impact organization, and Ignite India, a platform focused on youth innovation and entrepreneurship.[1] [2][3]
Jayaprakash first gained recognition as a competitive swimmer, representing India at an early age and building a record-setting career. He won six gold medals at the South Asian Games in 2007 and went on to set multiple national records.[4][5]
Biography
editAgnishwar Jayaprakash was born on 4 August 1990 in Chennai, India to R. N. Jayaprakash, an entrepreneur, and Bhavani Jayaprakash, an academic.[1]
Agnishwar was educated at Chettinad Vidyashram.[6] He obtained a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from Anna University and a Bachelor of Business Law from Annamalai University in 2013. He later completed a Master of Business Administration in Marketing from Queens University of Charlotte in United States in 2014.[6] In 2017 and 2018, he attended executive education programs in strategy and leadership at Harvard Business School and Harvard University.[7]
Swimming career

Jayaprakash is a former breaststroke swimmer who represented India in international competitions from a young age. He stated that his interest in swimming began at the age of three as part of efforts to improve his respiratory condition.[2] He made his debut at the FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) in 2004 in Indianapolis at the age of 14, becoming one of the youngest Indian swimmers to compete at the event.[8]
Jayaprakash went on to achieve multiple national records, including six records set in 2012 at the World Short Course Championships in Istanbul.[9] Jayaprakash also won six gold medals at the South Asian Games in Pakistan in 2007, and an Asian age-group gold medal the same year, marking one of the most successful performances by an Indian swimmer in regional competition.[10]
His career included participation in international training programs under coaches such as David Marsh, Eddie Reese, and Dave Salo, and he trained alongside Olympic-level swimmers including Ryan Lochte and Cullen Jones.[11] He also competed in events such as the Commonwealth Youth Games, where he placed fourth in the 200m individual medley in 2008.[5] In a 2009 article, The Times of India described him as Asia's fastest under-18 breaststroke swimmer.[4]
In 2015, during the Chennai floods, he played a role in relief efforts through Agni Foundation, an organization he founded. The foundation's work during the crisis received recognition at the World CSR Congress, where it won four awards in Mumbai.[10]
Ventures
editIn 2013, Jayaprakash founded AEDX, an organization focused on educational travel and experiential learning programs across India. The company designed curated travel experiences integrating academic exposure, cultural learning, and research-oriented activities.[12]
In 2014, he established Agni Foundation, a Chennai-based non-profit aimed at improving access to education, healthcare, and basic services. The foundation works on bridging gaps between donors and underserved communities and supports initiatives aligned with social development goals.[13]
That same year, he founded Ignite India, a platform focused on youth empowerment through innovation, entrepreneurship, and skill development. The initiative has collaborated with the United Nations Information Centre and has conducted programs engaging students in sustainability and innovation challenges.[6][13]
Garuda Aerospace
editIn 2015, Jayaprakash founded Garuda Aerospace to address practical challenges faced by Indian farmers.[14] The company specializes in the design, manufacturing, and deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles. Garuda Aerospace develops drone solutions for applications including precision agriculture, mapping, industrial inspection, and surveillance.[15]
Garuda Aerospace gained media attention and early opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic after Jayaprakash proposed using drones to sanitize public spaces in Tamil Nadu.[9] In October 2021, Jayaprakash met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed the use of drones for public services, including delivery in remote areas, as part of Garuda Aerospace's ongoing operations.[16]
Under his leadership, Garuda Aerospace has focused on integrating drone technology into large-scale agricultural operations, including crop monitoring, pesticide spraying, and data-driven farm management. The company has also contributed to the broader adoption of UAV technologies in commercial and public sector use in India and outside.[15]
In 2022, Indian cricketer MS Dhoni invested in the Garuda Aerospace and eventually became brand ambassador.[17] In 2023, the company was valued at around US$250 million. The company's manufacturing facilities in Manesar and Chennai were virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.[18]
The company has also entered into partnerships with organizations such as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for the development of advanced drone systems capable of carrying higher payloads.[19]
During Cyclone Montha, Garuda Aerospace deployed drones for surveillance, damage assessment, and coordination, an effort that was recognized by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in November 2025.[20] Agnishwar Jayaprakash was also honored by Governor R. N. Ravi in Chennai for his contributions to India's drone technology sector.[21] Garuda Aerospace has also entered into partnerships with global organizations such as Lockheed Martin and Elbit Systems for its expansion into international markets.[2]
Public engagements
editJayaprakash served as the lead producer of Ezham Arivu: Search for Tamil Nadu's Young Scientist, a 2016 science-focused reality television show on DD Podhigai that aimed to identify and nurture young innovators across Tamil Nadu, inspired by the vision of A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.[22]
In 2017, Agnishwar Jayaprakash was among a select group that met former U.S. President Barack Obama during his visit to India, where discussions focused on youth and leadership.[23]
