Agave 'Ben's Dream' is a recent cultivar of Agave.[1][2] It is an example of one form of introduction of new Mangave (Agave) cultivars, by mutation (sport) off of another plant.[3]

Description

Leaft detail

While most Agave are monocarpic[4], Agave 'Ben's Dream', as with other selections formerly included in x Mangave, is polycarpic, blooming annually.[5]

It has a spread of around 2 feet (0.6 meters) with irregularly variegated leaves measuring 10–30 inches (0.25–0.76 meters) in length, each with a subtle prickly margin and a narrow spike at the tip.[6] At maturity, the plant produces a moderately tall, narrowly branched inflorescence adorned with green blossoms, which can reach a height of 6–7 feet (1.8–2.1 meters).[7] Unlike its ortet 'Snow Leopard', 'Ben's Dream' exhibits unpredictable sectoral variegation, potentially producing fully albino offsets. This trait is unusual[8] and shared by very few succulent plants cultivars.

Cultivation

edit

While Agave 'Ben's Dream' was discovered recently, it may eventually enter cultivation as an ornamental plant. Its parent 'Snow Leopard' is present in waterwise gardens.[9]
