Abogen is a clinical-stage biotechnology company dedicated to the development of novel medicines through RNA-based technology innovations.
History
editEstablished in 2019, the company has built in-house capabilities to support the entire mRNA drug development cycle — from protein engineering, mRNA sequence design and synthesis, lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery, formulation, all the way to commercial-scale manufacturing. [1]
In 2020, Abogen partnered with Walvax Biotechnology to develop ARCoV, an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine candidate. In June the same year, the COVID-19 vaccine candidate became the first mRNA vaccine approved for clinical trials by China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA). [2]
In 2021, Abogen secured $1 billion across two funding rounds, which accounted for approximately 3.5% of the total private biotech funding raised worldwide, and topped the global ranking in Evaluate Vintage's year-end report. [3]
In 2022, Abogen received Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from Indonesia's Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) for ARCoV. [4]
In 2024, Abogen announced the publication of "Efficient circularization of protein-encoding RNAs via a novel cis-splicing system" in Nucleic Acids Research, describing a cis-splicing system for circular RNA (circRNA) production designed to extend protein expression and reduce innate immune activation. [5] Later that year, Abogen and Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, co-founded the Nucleic Acid Drug Research Institute. [6] Abogen's intellectual property portfolio related to mRNA technology and products ranked fourth globally in terms of patent filing activities in 2024, alongside BioNTech, Moderna, Sanofi and Pfizer. In 2025, Abogen announced that ABO2102, an mRNA cancer vaccine targeting KRAS-mutant solid tumors, obtained IND approvals from both China's NMPA and the US FDA. [8][9] At the 2025 AACR Annual Meeting, Abogen presented data on ABO2013, an EGFR neoantigen-specific mRNA vaccine candidate for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), reporting immunogenicity in human immune cell studies and anti-tumor activity in mouse models. [10] Abogen's RSV and VZV mRNA vaccine candidates entered Phase II clinical trials in September and November 2025, respectively. [11][12]
In April 2026, Abogen presented preliminary data at the AACR Annual Meeting from a first-in-human (FIH) study of ABO2203, an mRNA-encoded CD3×CD19 bispecific T-cell engager (TCE), in patients with relapsed/refractory B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (R/R B-NHL). Among the nine patients treated at doses up to 1,920 μg, no dose-limiting toxicities, cytokine release syndrome, or ICANS were observed, and maximum tolerated dose was not reached. [13] In May 2026, Abogen announced that research on ABO2203 for refractory autoimmune diseases had been selected for a Poster Tour Presentation at the EULAR 2026 Congress. The candidate demonstrated gradual in vivo expression and rapid B-cell depletion without steroid premedication, supporting potential outpatient subcutaneous administration. [14]
