AALTO International is an independent fashion brand founded in 2014 by Finnish designer Tuomas Merikoski. Originally incorporated in Finland, the brand's creative and commercial operations — including its studio and showroom — have been established in Paris since its founding. The brand has presented at Paris Fashion Week as a member of the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode (FHCM) since 2015.
Founder
editTuomas Merikoski was born and raised in Finland. He graduated from the Institut Français de la Mode (IFM) in Paris in 2003. He subsequently worked at Givenchy under Creative Director Riccardo Tisci, and later at Louis Vuitton under Creative Director Kim Jones, collaborating with LVMH until 2018. He founded AALTO International in parallel in 2014 while still working within the LVMH group.[1]
In 2023 Merikoski was appointed Creative Director of Philippe Model Paris.[2]
History
editAALTO International presented its first Paris Fashion Week collection in 2015. In 2016 the brand was selected as a finalist for both the LVMH Prize[3] and the ANDAM Fashion Award.[4] The brand was again nominated for the ANDAM Fashion Award in 2017.
In 2022 Merikoski transformed the brand entirely, moving operations and part of production to Plateau Fertile, the circular manufacturing facility operated by Fashion Green Hub in Paris. From this point all AALTO pieces were produced using exclusively recycled materials and circular production methods — notably developing semi-industrial methods of production with 100% post-consumer recycled materials.
The brand simultaneously developed and launched the Recoded™ system, embedding unit-level digital identities in all products. The system was developed to bring persistent transparency to consumers, providing an experiential record of each garment's creative story, material composition, origin, and verified environmental footprint. This shift in production saves up to 80% of the carbon and water-use footprint compared to a conventional product equivalent.
The EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is expected to mandate Digital Product Passports for all textiles from approximately 2027–2028. AALTO implemented the system in 2022, before the regulation came into force.
Design
editMerikoski has described his creative approach as transgressive, drawing on Finnish heritage, values and popular culture. He has stated: "My inspiration and creativity is transgressive — in the crossroad of original Finnish heritage, values and pop culture." He has also said: "It's within diversity and contrasts the future lies — there is no space for static definitions."[5]
The brand's aesthetic combines Finnish organic and raw beauty with Parisian elegance and effortless chic, exaggerated silhouettes, and references to architecture including the work of Alvar Aalto and Oscar Niemeyer, as well as several contemporary artists.
Recoded™
editRecoded™ is a smart Digital Product Passport infrastructure originally developed by and for AALTO International. Each passported piece carries a unique identifier (UID) in multiple formats, including a twelve-digit serial number, and a scannable QR code, RFID or NFC tag linking to a permanently active digital record. The system documents material composition, manufacturing origin, creative story, and images, and aims to provide verified environmental data, lifecycle services, and interactive customer service access at unit and consumer level.
Recognition
editAALTO International has been featured in The New York Times Style Magazine,[6] W Magazine, Wallpaper*, Vogue.fr, WWD, Vogue Italia, Harper's Bazaar, Elle France, Marie Claire France, i-D, Dazed and Confused, POP Magazine, Jalouse, and Crash Magazine, among others.
