A Montreal Paul is the alias used by Canadian musician Paul Beaulieu, currently living in Burlington, Vermont.

Early life

Paul Beaulieu was born in 1974 and grew up in Montreal, Quebec. He studied at McGill University and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and a Masters of Library & Information Sciences. After his studies, he worked as a librarian from 1999-2002 at the Brooklyn Public Library before moving back to Montreal where he maintained a consistently high artistic output spanning mediums including poetry, photography, audio recordings and performance art.

History

A persistent creator who has eschewed participation in arts industries, Beaulieu has accumulated an extensive catalog of musical albums many of which are self-recorded and produced. His compositions draw inspirations from acoustic folk and psychedelia, showcasing guitar playing and singing, occasionally including a capella harmonies and additional instrumentation. A self-taught musician, Beaulieu tends to disregard traditional musical tempos, opting instead for atonal harmonies and unpredictable shifts. Beaulieu began to play music in 1992. Since then, his creative output has garnered the admiration of his contemporaries. As such, and while many of Beaulieu's albums are solo efforts, he has also incorporated other collaborators in his recordings and live, many of whom are active contributors to Montreal's arts community.

As a performance artist, Beaulieu took part in productions by the Social Justice Connection between 1996 and 2010. In 1997, Beaulieu participated in a Donovan King production of Art Attack at McGill University, which denounced the Iraq War. In 2003, Beaulieu produced and performed at events organized by Montreal youth organisation Head & Hands, notably including the organization's annual Anti-Hallmark Valentine's Day Love Brigade event^[1].

Beaulieu began to use the monicker A Montreal Paul in 2008. His debut 2012 album 'Awaiting an Awakening' was recorded at Marsonic Studios by Shane Watt, and was mastered by Harris Newman^[2]. Watt, along with Krista Muir plays on the album.

His 2014 album 'When We Get There' was produced by multimedia artist Laura Crapo with engineering assistance from Alden Penner who also made musical contributions to the album. Beaulieu performed live in support of the album which spent several weeks on the Canadian National Campus-Community Radio Association Charts, topping at number 7^[3], and garnered sustained interest^[4] ^[5].

In 2016, Beaulieu released the 'Now is the Needed Time EP', under the Voices Arising monicker. The album showcases a short collection of carols, spirituals, and other songs about Christmas and the Winter Solstice.

Beaulieu recorded his 2018 A Montreal Paul album 'Words...and Things' with Max Demarais at Bridgehead Studio. Demarais also recorded portions of A Montreal Paul's 2020 album 'Alternative Reality Show, Episode 2'.

A Montreal Paul's 2020 album '2020 Vision' was released on Montreal-based Totally Real Probably Not Fake Records, a sub-imprint of which, Hermoso Lugar Productions, had previously released his 2019 album 'Points of View'.

In 2021, Beaulieu released the 'Leviathan' single with Holy Crap Records^[6].

As A Montreal Paul, Beaulieu has performed extensively both in Canada and the US, at venues including at seminal folk venue the Yellow Door^[7], and at festival Suoni per il Popolo and the Montreal Psych Fest. He performs both solo, and with a backup band, Carnival of Light, whose membership has in the past included Eric Bent of Montreal drone-punk band Boar God, Shane Watt, Krista Muir and Mari Sild of jazz band the Jazzotopes. A Montreal Paul has performed live alongside both Alden Penner and Laura Crapo^[8].

Beaulieu has contributed to many other musical projects. He has been a core member of the Montreal-based ensemble Best Friends (Grenadine Records) with whom he has performed since 2011^[9] and whose debut album 'Summer of Potluck' charted on campus-community radio^[10]. From 2014-2015, Beaulieu arranged and composed music for worship services at the St Jax Montréal the Apostle Anglican Church in Montreal. He has also been a member of Montreal free-form ensemble Blackheart Family & Families, and since 2021, of progressive rock band Tornadoes of Blood.

In addition to his music, Beaulieu is an accomplished visual artist. His photographs and illustrations are included in his album art and have been showcased as part of art exhibitions, including at Artificial Palaces: A Selection of Musical Maps, a 2014 musical event curated by Shane Watt, held at Death of Vinyl, and as part of the 2015 Right On Right ON! collective show at Montreal venue Burritoville.
