The 2018 Northeast Derecho was a long lived and deadly derecho that impacted parts of the lower Northeastern United States. The derecho killed 5 people and injured 7 more.[4]
Before the Event
editAt 12:30 PM, the Storm Prediction Center issued a moderate risk for parts of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Southern New York and other small areas of different states.[5] The primary threats for the event were severe winds and large hail, with a small risk of lower end tornadoes present.
During the Event
editThe first storms started forming at 11:00 AM in Northeastern Ohio, and moved eastward into Pennsylvania, knocking down small trees in Wayne, Ohio.
By 1:00 PM, The storms advanced into central Pennsylvania, bringing with it severe hail and wind. Supercells began forming ahead of the developing line, bringing more severe hail and wind. The first fatality occurred when a tree was knocked onto an occupied car.[6]
The derecho only gained intensity by 3:00 PM. A supercell formed in Northwestern Connecticut that dropped a few tornadoes. An extremely powerful Macroburst blasted Fairfield County, Connecticut with up to 110-mph winds, killed two and injured one.[7] a 70-mph[8] wind gust knocked a tree onto a moving car, killing the driver.[6] An eleven year old was killed when a tree crushed a car.[6]
Falling trees caused another 3 injuries and 1 fatality as the derecho further creeped east at 5:00 PM.
Aftermath
editSleeping Giant State Park, located in Connecticut, was closed for over a year due to a powerful Microburst that knocked down hundreds of trees.[9] Damage in Newburgh, New York was dire enough for the city to close all roads.[10] At least 600,000 People were left without power after the event.
The storm system was powerful enough to generate a small Meteotsunami near Long Island.[11]

10 tornadoes were documented in total, with one fatality and no injuries. An EF2 tornado struck the town of Kent, New York, which stripped part of the roof off of a strip mall and uprooted large trees.[7]
One person was killed by an EF0 tornado that hit Balmville, New York.[7][8]
