The 1972 Israeli chief rabbi elections resulted in the appointment of Ashkenazi rabbi Shlomo Goren and Sephardic rabbi Ovadia Yosef as Chief Rabbis of Israel.

The 1972 election process was characterised by tension and political turmoil due to the Langer controversy.

Ovadia Yosef was elected Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel by a majority vote of 81 to 68 and Shlomo Goren by a majority vote of 89 to 57.[1]
