Subcategories

edit

I have gone through all the subcategories in "Wikipedians by ethnicity" (which we may wish to move to "Wikipedians by ethnicity and nationality" or similar soon) and searched for Category:Wikipedians by location counterparts and Wikipedia articles for each location and people to try and help establish an organized and consistent dichotomy between "Location" and "Ethnicity". Here's what I've got:

What about people from the United states, or anywhere in america that are not "Native American"? I do not see 'caucasian' or 'latino' on the list anywhere ? Andrew Powell 21:14, 16 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

There are no categories for them at this point; there aren't categories for many things (and there are some categories that seem contradictory or redundant, like having both "American Indians" and "American Indians and Alaskan Natives" categories), you've merely listed a couple of the ones that seemed glaring to you. I've merely listed the ethnicity categories I found; I haven't yet made any suggestions, criticisms, or endorsements regarding that list. If a category for people who identify as having a United States ethnicity or nationality, though (as contrasted with the location and possibly citizenship one, Category:Wikipedians in the United States), it would probably be called Category:American Wikipedians. "Latino", a very general ethnic group, probably doesn't yet exist because it's so vague (it could perhaps serve as an overcategory for "Venezuelan Wikipedians", etc., but some might object to the classification, so...); "Caucasian", which is a race, not an ethnic group, is even more so, and thus would be even more unhelpful in most cases for self-identification (and potentially POVed or offensive). Then again, the number of people who have placed themselves only in Category:Wikipedians in Europe suggests that vague categories can be popular. :) -Silence 22:38, 16 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ethnicity / Nationality / Location

edit

These are really three independant things. I am a U.S. citizen, but ethnically I'm as British as can be. I have a friend who is Canadian but living in the U.S. Another is ethnically chinese, but she was born and living in California. I think it would be better to create Category:Wikipedians by nationality. -- ProveIt (talk) 22:10, 3 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree that "ethnicity" does not fit all of the catagories. What about Category:Wikipedians by ancestry, which could also serve to catagorize persons descending from a certain "class" (e.g., Confederate soldiers; soldiers of the Black Watch; soldiers of the Coldstream Guards; etc.)?--Fix Bayonets! 02:46, 28 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

East-European Jewish?

edit

Why category for Jewish people or people of Jewish descant doesn't exist? I mean non-German, but Polish, Russian... Not all the people of East-European Jews dead in the II World War! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kowalmistrz (talkcontribs) 16:29, 29 January 2007 (UTC).Reply

Categorisation into 'People by nationality' categories

edit

I've just noticed that these categories are usually subcategories of the relevant 'people by nationality' category - e.g. Category:American Wikipedians is a subcategory of Category:American people. Does anyone else think this is inappropriate? Shouldn't those categories be for people with articles, not editors? I would remove them myself, but the practice seems pretty widespread.
