In 2026, three young male offenders were sentenced for sexual assaults in the town of Fordingbridge in Hampshire, England. They had been convicted of committing two rapes in November 2024 and January 2025 respectively, one at knifepoint, and filming the assaults.[1] They were all sentenced to youth rehabilitation orders, a form of non-custodial sentence.[1]

editRegarding the defendants, the sentencing judge Nicholas Rowland stated at the sentencing hearing that he wanted to "avoid criminalising these children unnecessarily".[3] He described the intellectual impairments of all three perpetrators in his remarks.[4]
One of the victims stated her distress on discovering the lenient sentences.[5] British politicians across the political spectrum expressed concern at the leniency of their sentences. The Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the sentencing would be reviewed by government law officers under the unduly lenient sentences scheme, which can refer sentences for certain offences to the Court of Appeal using powers created by the Criminal Justice Act 1988.[6][7]
The case was subsequently referred to the Court of Appeal.[8]
Gisele Pelicot said that she was deeply shocked by the case and called for justice to take its course.[9][10]
