Robert Josephberg

Robert Gary Josephberg is an American ophthalmologist, teacher, vitreo-retinal surgeon and inventor who is one of the pioneers of sutureless vitrectomy surgery.[1][2][3]

Biography

Dr. Josephberg grew up in Yonkers, New York. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1972 and Albany Medical College in 1976, where he received an M.D degree. He did his residency at the Newark Eye and Ear Infirmary from 1977 to 1980. From 1980 to 1982 he did a fellowship in retina and vitreous at Baylor College of Medicine under the tutelage of Dr. Alice McPherson. He was board certified in ophthalmology in 1981.[4][5]

He is married and has a daughter and a son.

Hula Hoop Champion at age seven

In 1957, Robert Josephberg won an award when he swirled a hula hoop around his hips 10,500 times in just under two hours, during a contest sponsored by John Wanamakers department store in the Cross County Shopping Center in Yonkers, New York[6][7][8]

Career

Robert Josephberg is a clinical associate professor at New York Medical College, and Assistant clinical professor at Newark University Hospital and the chief of retina a vitreous at Westchester Medical Center. He is a charter inductee into the Retina Hall of Fame.[5]

Josephberg has published over 40 scientific articles and presentations, mostly in the field of retina. He has served on the Board of directors of the American Diabetes Association and the Jewish Guild. He currently sees patients in his private practice in Yonkers, New York and teaches residents at New York Medical College, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.[9][10][11][12]

Robert Josephberg is a pioneer in sutureless vitrectomy surgery for which he holds three patents[13][14][15] and ergonomic scleral depression for which he holds one patent.[16] He is also an authority on endophthalmitis (an infection of the eye),[17][18][19] shaken baby syndrome[20] and uveitis (an inflammation of the eye).[21][22][23][24]
