Davit Azati Manukyan (Armenian: Դավիթ Ազատի Մանուկյան; born 15 October 1971) is an Armenian former military officer of the Artsakh Defence Army and an detainee who was captured on 27 September 2023 by Azerbaijani authorities at the Hakari Bridge checkpoint, while trying to head towards Armenia.[1][2]
Biography
editDavit Manukyan was born in Jermuk, Armenia SSR, on October 15, 1971. He is the brother of the politician and member of parliament Gegham Manukyan. He began serving in the Armenian Armed Forces and the Artsakh Defense Army in 1992 during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. He reached the rank of Major General and the position of First Deputy Commander of the Artsakh Defense Army in 2019. He retired from service in 2021.[3]
In 2023, Manukyan took part in the formation of the "Front of Security and Development of Artsakh" alongside public figures such as Ruben Bardanyan. At a press conference for the movement, he stated that "This process of ours is forced by the anti-Artsakh policy of Azerbaijan and the government of Armenia, as well as by the minor, small ferments taking place in Artsakh" [4]
After the 2023 Azerbaijani offensive in Nagorno-Karabakh, Manukyan was arrested at the Hakari Bridge on September 27, 2023, by Azerbaijani military personnel. He was trying to reach Armenia along with the rest of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh who were expelled from the region.[5]
On February 5, 2026, he was sentenced by an Azerbaijani court to life imprisonment, alongside Arayik Harutyunyan, Levon Mnatsakanyan, and David Babayan.[6][7]
