Secondly, the sourcing here is weak. Don't cite Wikipedia. Cites 3 and 4 need pages.   MWFwiki (talk) 04:06, 16 May 2026 (UTC)

Background

edit

In 1221, the Khwarezmian Empire under Jalal al-Din Mangburni attempted to expand into the Caucasus following the Mongol invasions of Persia. Ganja, a strategic city in Arran, controlled key trade and military routes between Shirvan and eastern Georgia. The Kingdom of Georgia, weakened by the recent death of King George IV, remained the main organized force capable of resisting the Khwarezmians.[1][2][3]

Battle

edit

Georgian forces, led by Queen Rusudan and Ivane Mkhargrdzeli, fortified the approaches to Ganja. Using mountain passes and defensive positions, they resisted Jalal al-Din's attempts at a direct assault. The Khwarezmian army suffered severe casualties due to the Georgians' defensive strategy and tactical counterattacks.[4]

Aftermath

edit

The heavy losses at Ganja prevented Jalal al-Din from establishing permanent control over Arran and the northern Caucasus. While Khwarezmian raids continued, this battle significantly weakened their forces and influenced the outcomes of later campaigns in eastern Anatolia and Lake Van.[5]
