Blue-billed white tern
The blue-billed white tern (Gygis candida) is a small tropical seabird in the family Laridae, occurring across the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean. Formerly treated as a subspecies within the white tern complex, conspecific with the the Atlantic white tern (G. alba) and the little white tern (G. microrhyncha), it is now generally recognised as a distinct species. First described by Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1789, it is an all-white tern with dark eyes, a black bill with a blue base, and slaty-blue legs. Two subspecies are recognised, ranging from the Seychelles and Maldives to Hawaii and the Pitcairn Islands. Unusually, chicks occasionally fall prey to Aldabra giant tortoises in the Seychelles. This blue-billed white tern of the subspecies G. c. candida was photographed in flight at Muri Lagoon, on Rarotonga in the Cook Islands.Photograph credit: Charles J. Sharp

New pages patrol January–February 2026 Backlog drive

edit
January–February 2026 Backlog Drive | New pages patrol

New Pages Patrol is hosting a one-time, two-month experimental backlog drive aimed at reducing the backlog. This will be a combo drive: both articles and redirects will earn points.

  • The drive will run from 1 January to 28 February 2026.
  • The drive is divided into two phases. Participants may take part in either phase or across both phases, depending on availability.
  • Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled during the drive.
  • Two-month drive-exclusive barnstars will be awarded to eligible participants.
  • Each article review earns 1 point, while each redirect review earns 0.2 points.
  • Streak awards will be granted based on consistently meeting weekly point thresholds.
  • Barnstars will also be awarded for re-reviewing articles previously reviewed by other patrollers during the drive.
  • Interested in participating? Sign up here.

Arbitration

  • Due to the result of a recent motion, a rough consensus of administrators at the arbitration enforcement noticeboard may impose an expanded topic ban on Israel, Israelis, Jews, Judaism, Palestine, Palestinians, Islam, and/or Arabs, if an editor's Arab-Israeli conflict topic ban is determined to be insufficient to prevent disruption. At least one diff per area expanded into should be cited.

  • Following a motion, remedy 9.1 of the Conduct in deletion-related editing case has been amended to limit TenPoundHammer to one XfD nomination or PROD per 24-hour period.
  • Following a motion, the Iskandar323 further POV pushing motion has been rescinded.
  • The Arbitration Committee has passed a housekeeping motion rescinding a number of outdated remedies and enforcement provisions across multiple legacy cases. In most instances, existing sanctions remain in force and continue to be appealable through the usual processes, while some case-specific remedies were amended or clarified.

Proposed deletion of Cryoturris albida

edit
Notice

The article Cryoturris albida has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Both Polystira albida and Cryoturris albida are synonym to Pleurotoma albida, they are equal. The former should be kept. (World Register of Marine Species & bagniliggia.it)

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion based on established criteria.

If the proposed deletion has already been carried out, you may request undeletion of the article at any time. Labratscientist (talk) 09:35, 10 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

No, they are not all synonyms but rather homonyms. Pleurotoma was used in the 1800s as a massive "catch-all" category for hundreds of different sea snails. George Perry described in 1811 Pleurotoma albida in the family Turridae. This later became a a direct synonym of Polystira albida.
In 1845, Charles Baker Adams described a completely different, much smaller snail also belonging to the family Turridae and also named his new shell Pleurotoma albida. This has now become an invalid junior homonym of Cryoturris albida, but WoRMS still regards Pleurotoma albida C. B. Adams, 1845 as an unsettled issue and gives Pleurotoma albida C. B. Adams, 1845 the status "uncertain - unassessed". This is adding to the confusion.
Cryoturris albida is therefore, in my opinion, a distinctly separate, valid species. It is not a synonym of Polystira albida. JoJan (talk) 12:24, 10 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I see. My original reasoning was definitely wrong, but I still think it should be removed. Based on my understanding now, the three most accepted database for gastropods should be WoRMS, WMSDB and GBIF. And WoRMS is generally regarded as more reliable. However, someone else should be making these decisions. I am surprised there's not a detailed WP:NSPECIES I can refer to.
  • "WoRMS や WMSDBの記載に違和感を覚えた時は、GBIF で最終的な判断を下した。"[When I felt something was inconsistent or strange in the descriptions on WoRMS or WMSDB, I made the final judgment using GBIF.]

I didn't know you answered at wikiproject, let me copy there. Labratscientist (talk) 14:16, 10 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
As long as WoRMS still regards Pleurotoma albida C. B. Adams, 1845 as an unsettled issue, we cannot regard Cryoturris albida as an accepted name or not. I guess it's up to a malacologist to settle the question. As we in Wikipedia are forbidden to do original research, we cannot settle this question. JoJan (talk) 14:29, 10 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
True. I actually have nothing say about this... I always thought scientists are quite keen on revisiting unresolved issues. I guess maybe not so much on taxonomy. Labratscientist (talk) 02:15, 11 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Don't ask too much. I'm already at my maximum and at my advanced age I can't take much more. I surely could use some help from interested people. JoJan (talk) 15:38, 10 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Just slow down, then, and check your work. The ref you grabbed from WoRMS doesn't link to where you think it does, and I have no idea where you go the description from since the ref is wrong. Please fix it. - UtherSRG (talk) 16:31, 10 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
And if you can't handle this, why do you have the admin bit? You should turn in your mop. - UtherSRG (talk) 16:32, 10 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I just tagged it as FV again. It's still not going to where you think it is going. I do not know where you got that description from. You could have made it up for all I can tell. Please click through the ref to the source and see that it is not what you think it is. - UtherSRG (talk) 17:37, 10 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
This link, provided by WoRMS, works fine with me. All you had to do is go to page 196 as prescribed in the link of WoRMS. Now I've changed the link to go directly to page 196. If you had any doubt about the text, I give you here the original text (together with the OCR mistakes):

"Tiara RuBRA. Tiara testd minutd, longitudinaliter costatd, transversim minutissimé striatd, rubrd albo fasciatd; canali subreflexo columella quadriplicatd"

Now you can rest assured I didn't make it up. JoJan (talk) 14:18, 11 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. That is the minimum needed - that you check your work and correct errors - instead of complaining that you are too old. - UtherSRG (talk) 14:25, 11 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Pusia multicostata

edit

FYI you deleted this as "making way for a move" but then didn't actually do the move. * Pppery * it has begun... 14:36, 15 March 2026 (UTC)

@Pppery: After I deleted it, I found out that this Pusia multicostata H.-J. Wang, 1982 is actually a homonym of Pusia multicostata (Broderip, 1836), itself a synonym is of Vexillum multicostatum (Broderip, 1836). I have send an email to WoRMS to signal this homonymy. I'm awaiting their response so that question can be resolved. JoJan (talk) 15:54, 16 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Metric fractions

edit

Thanks for your many contributions to plant articles! I happened to be cleaning up special characters, and noticed mixing of vulgar fractions with millimeters on Auriculella cerea. MOS:FRAC says decimal fractions should be used with the metric system. I've been tidying this up a fair amount in older plant content, but this was a newer contribution. -- Beland (talk) 08:00, 18 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

However, they may be heard by the Committee if COIVRTers disagree on the interpretation of the evidence or believe ArbCom would be better suited to hear the appeal. Administrators are also advised that loosening or lifting such blocks without the consent of someone with access to the queue or ArbCom can be grounds for desysopping.
  • Per a recent motion, restrictions issued directly by the Committee may now be enforced with blocks which work exactly like contentious topic blocks.
  • The arbitration case Maghreb has been closed.

Hello JoJan,

New Page Review queue November 2025 - May 2026

Backlog update

At the time of this message, there are 15,282 articles and 32,951 redirects awaiting review.

After the January–February drive the article backlog was reduced to 15,179 articles and the redirect backlog to 19,053 respectively. Great job! However, both queues are growing rapidly and any additional reviews are highly appreciated.

2024 and 2025 NPP Awards

JTtheOG was selected as the NPP reviewer of the year for both 2024 and 2025, for reviewing the most articles amongst all reviewers.

Hey man im josh and MPGuy2824 won the Redirect Ninja Master Award for 2024 and 2025 respectively, for reviewing the most redirects.

Overall in 2024, one Platinum, two Gold, eight Silver, 12 Bronze and 45 Iron Barnstars were awarded. Additionally, 66 reviewers got the NPP barnstar for doing more than 100 reviews through the year. In 2025, one Platinum, ten Silver, 13 Bronze and 38 Iron Barnstars were awarded. Additionally, 38 reviewers got the NPP barnstar for doing more than 100 reviews through the year.

BoyTheKingCanDance, Rosiestep, SunDawn, and Vanderwaalforces were inducted into the NPP Hall of Fame for having two separate years of 2,000+ article reviews.

January–February backlog drive

The experimental two-month long backlog drive concluded with 183 reviewers patrolling over 27,761 articles and 35,309 redirects, earning over 36,836 points. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 6,484.6 points in this drive.

May backlog drive

An article-only backlog drive is currently underway. We are hoping to make a big dent in the backlog. You can read more about it or join at Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Backlog drives/May 2026.

PageTriage

An attempt was made to get the New Pages Feed to sort by date marked as reviewed instead of date created. However we had to revert it due to bugs. We may try again in the future. You can subscribe to the Phabricator ticket if you're interested in following along.
