System for finding vital articles in need of recording

edit

Hi all,

I have just finished working on a system that uses PetScan to find all vital articles that lack a spoken version. I have classified the articles by vital level and by topic.

You can see the project on my sandbox:

Would there be any interest in implementing this into the WikiProject page?

How to start

edit

Maybe this was already discussed in one of the archives (had a hard time keyword searching) but exactly what equipment/software is recommended, and how would audiofiles be uploaded to a specific article? And does the entire article itself need to be a single audiofile or do listeners have the option to select the audio of specific sections? And how are wikilinks handled?

Or is there an existing wiki-page with clear instructions?

They are uploaded to Commons and the instructions for recording a human reading are visibly linked at the top of the page: Wikipedia:WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia/Article choice guidelines. This page should answer your question. It should be uploaded as a single file – if you'd like listeners to have the option to jump to a specific section, you can support this wish in the ongoing Community Wishlist: W306: Video & audio chapters (jump to timestamp) (voting open) which could then be used to add timestamps for all the article sections. Wikilinks are handled like any other content: the visible text is read, not the wikilink. Prototyperspective (talk) 11:58, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Regarding: It should be uploaded as a single fileTemplate:Spoken Wikipedia supports multiple files. Examples: Angry Birds#External links, Cat#External links, Universe#External links, World War I#External links. —andrybak (talk) 13:58, 26 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I was well aware of it being technically possible. Best practices would be uploading one file. For example one can then download it into a podcast player and do it with one download and it can also be set on wikidata items as one audio file etc. Prototyperspective (talk) 15:27, 26 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
This article has some recommendations for software along with recording guidelines: Recording guidelines. TrulyFlawed (talk) 03:39, 4 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Standardising Loudness

edit

When producing any audio I have always worked to a specification which is especially clear on loudness. For example: in the UK The BBC ask for an average loudness of -23 LUFS (inline with EBU R 128) and -1 dBTP (true peak) on the radio. I know that both Audacity and Audition are capable of processing audio like this. It would make it significantly easier to switch between different articles or other pieces of media without having to constantly change your volume (imo more important than compression).

Not everyone would conform to it and that's fine, and possible it should be out of the way as to not confuse, but would it be useful to have written down for anyone who wants to make sure their recording is to the letter? Apologies if this already exists and I have missed it (: Maxdvalue (talk) 00:11, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

There is some guidance on volume levels at Wikipedia:WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia/Recording guidelines#Production tips. I know very little about audio recording, and some of it was written in 2005, so I don't know how relevant the advice there is to modern versions of Audacity. —andrybak (talk) 21:51, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
RMS relates to volume (the actual shape of the wave), LUFs and loudness relate to how we perceive the sound, I find it a little more useful. Thought it could be nice to have the loudness listed as well as the linked advice, but by adding it I would be picking a standard out of many.. is this ok to do? Could someone who knows Russian and has a good mic thingy translate the audio file of the anouncement of Chernobyl disaster into an English audio file? Thanks! In solidarity Wikipedian12512 (Talking is fine | contribs) 00:49, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
