Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Japan

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion and merging of articles related to Japan. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Japan|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Japan. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Asia.

List of hāfu in popular culture (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

This is almost unreferenced (just three footnotes). None of the refs suggest a list like this merits WP:NLIST. This is just the usual WP:INDISCRIMINATE, MOS:TRIVIA/WP:IPC failure - the kitchen sink WP:ORish collection of all works that the concept of Hāfu appears in, in some cases in passing (as a secondary character etc.). I don't think there is any value in redirecting this to Hāfu#Hāfu_in_popular_culture, which has no context outside a see also list to this, well, list. Surprisingly, this was created as recently as 2022, but it resembles the poor standards of the early years of Wikipedia. Topic is not notable. I cannot find any reliable sources that satisfy WP:SIGCOV for him. I checked his article in other language versions of Wikipedia and found articles that mention him only in passing. Please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Anime and manga#Buriki. Z. Relisting comment: Since this is a BLP and expectations for sportspeople have hardened I'm going to ask those arguing commonsense to look at sources and argue which ones meet our requirements, rather than relying on ja which I vaguely recall has much less developed notability standards.

How great is the coverage? With points 3. and 4. of WP:NAUTHOR, a creative can be notable by virtue of the notability of their works. EnjoyLightEnjoyTruth (talk) 15:59, 2 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I could not find anything about this anime other than routine announcements. Redirect to Liden Films#Television series would be alternative to deletion. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. Djalim ໒꒱˚。⋆ 14:54, 24 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment. I'd like to vote keep but I can't see anything that goes beyond rewritten press releaes and has SIGCOV. Ping me if better sources are found. I looked at ANN stuff listed here but, well, see the first sentence of my comment. So far it seems like the series got very little reception/commentary. Few sentences here, few there... very very low key. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 12:54, 7 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Found nothing to meet criteria of WP:NMUSIC and WP:NALBUM. Zne0us Phenix (talk) 03:47, 24 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

  • Note: this discussion has been included in the AfD sorting lists for the following topics: Albums and songs and Japan. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 13:22, 24 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. Satisfies GNG. This includes the single "Kaze no Invitation" which was number 1 , and has coverage in Oricon Weekly on 19 May 1986. I am also under the impression that Oricon were in the habit of reviewing the number 1 single. The album also includes the single "Heart No Ignition" which was number 2, and was the theme song of Sukeban Deka III. There is also some other online coverage of both, eg BS12 TwellV and various other items. I suspect that an offline search might find album reviews in Music Labo and Music Research. James500 (talk) 18:52, 24 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to improve the article. But I found nothing as reference. Your provided references don't satisfy WP:NALBUM. I have already checked those two. Zne0us Phenix (talk) 02:28, 25 May 2026 (UTC) Zne0us (talk contribs) has made few or no other edits outside this topic. James500 (talk) 08:06, 25 May 2026 (UTC) The admin and checkuser Ponyo says that Zne0us' account is a WP:BADCLEANSTART. James500 (talk) 00:31, 31 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
The album satisfies GNG and some of its tracks satisfy criteria 2, 5 and 7 of NALBUM. I provided more than two sources. Since most Japanese newspapers and magazines from the 1986 and 1987 are not available online, this nomination does not comply with the requirements of WP:NPOSSIBLE or WP:BEFORE. James500 (talk) 08:16, 25 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
The album satisfies criteria 2 of NALBUM: It reached number 8 on the Japanese LPs chart published in Cash Box (13 December 1986, p 12). Unfortunately, no chart was published on 20 December. The Japanese Wikipedia article says it reached number 5 on the Oricon chart. James500 (talk) 19:32, 25 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Oricon is a holding company, not Japan's national music chart. Criteria 2 doesn't apply here. 2 is coverage of a song by the singer, not about the album. Zne0us Phenix (talk) 23:42, 25 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I did not mention the holding company. The Oricon charts are national music charts. Criteria 2 does apply. The BS12 article is about the album, because the song "Kaze No Invitation" is part of the album, which is a collection of songs including that one. The guideline says that songs may be merged to an article about an album. James500 (talk) 00:30, 26 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
"Kaze No Invitation" also has coverage in volume 2 of Oricon No. 1 Hits 500 (Clubhouse, 1998), ISBN 9784906496136. James500 (talk) 08:56, 26 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Yukari Fresh (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

I have been unable to find significant coverage to support WP:GNG from search or other Wikipedia articles in different languages. Scholar searches lists the artist within the context of Shibuya-kei music of that era but wouldn't extend past a singular mention. I'd be open to a redirect to Shibuya-kei as she is kinda known(?) in the genre. BriefEdits (talk) 03:43, 18 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]

  • Search “Yukari Fresh” on the Japanese Web
  • Delete? She does even have a Japanese wikipedia only her band Snapshot. Warm Regards, Miminity (Talk?) (me contribs) 01:41, 20 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete – Per lack of WP:SIGCOV. Svartner (talk) 22:10, 21 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep as she has significant reliable sources coverage with an AllMusic staff written review here, AllMusic staff written album reviews here and here, and a Japan Times album review here. Haven't done a full search yet but this looks like a WP:GNG pass, imv Atlantic306 (talk) 23:02, 22 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
For what it’s worth, it’s all by the same guy (both on site and on other publications). I feel like that wouldn’t help SIGCOV. BriefEdits (talk) 06:05, 24 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. Satisfies GNG. Even if the coverage already cited was not enough (and it is more than enough), you can add the biography, album review and other coverage in CDJournal , the article "Yukari Fresh" in the Ares Informática magazine Shirase (number 25, on p 61), coverage in Natalie and OKMusic, and coverage in sources in Google Books, Google News and the Internet Archive. And since Snapshot began in 1992, there may be more coverage offline. The argument made above, that Japanese Wikipedia includes a biography section for her in their article on Snapshot, instead of a separate article, is WP:OSE. Even if it wasn't OSE, it would be an argument for a page move rather than deletion. James500 (talk) 23:04, 24 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I am unfamiliar with a lot of these sources so I'm linking what I can find here for others. (Wiki links: CD Journal, OK Music, Natalie). Would you be able to link the Shirase article by chance? Thank you. - BriefEdits (talk) 05:26, 26 May 2026 (UTC)[reply]
The article in Shirase is 223 words long and is written in Spanish. It is a critical assessment of her music generally. It also says (among many other things) that "Yukarin Disco" was used for w:es:Viaje a los sueños polares (programa radiofónico). James500 (talk) 00:34, 3 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
After reviewing the sources you've listed, I couldn't find articles that would feature the subject in depth. A lot of the them are passing in nature with minimal mentions. As it stands, it's a bunch of reviews by Ian Martin (AllMusic) and sporadic one-line mentions in other sources. There is always the case to be made for offline sources but I'd be more comfortable changing my mind if somebody who knows more about the subject would pop-in and say "yeah she's very well known in the scene". Is the Shirase article online by chance? I could always just google translate it. I'm still not quite sure what kind of source it is. -- BriefEdits (talk) 04:45, 4 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
The coverage in CDJournal is significant. It is not passing, minimal or one line. There is a biography, an album review of "Trefoils Hat", a commentary on "Flammable Tapes", a commentary on "Instrumentally Flammable", and another commentary on "Me". That is more like a total of five paragraphs than one line (excluding tracklists, and a few other mentions, etc). That is certainly in depth coverage from this source. • Delete, no SIGCOV, not WP:GNG. Changed to Keep, found some sources which I'll list below. Felinaex (purr / pawprints) 19:43, 2 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
This WP:SLEEPER account is making very large numbers of identical or virtually identical AfD !votes at very high speed. At 19:43 on 2 June 2026 he made three virtually identical "fails GNG" !votes in one minute: . There is no way that this user could have read this AfD or this article, let alone looked at any of the sources to determine whether they satisfy GNG, in 20 seconds. And it gets worse. In the previous minute, 19:42, he made two identical votes in one minute: . Then at 19:40, another two: , and then one at 19:39 . And, when you look at the rest of his contributions, it goes on and on and on like this, practically all day, every day, for a number of days (2 June, 1 June, 31 May and 30 May). This user wants to delete as many articles as possible, so he is spraying indiscriminate mass automatic delete votes over every AfD in sight, without making any attempt to determine whether the topic actually satisfies GNG. These votes are certainly disruptive spam and a deliberate attempt at WP:FAITACCOMPLI, since he is trying to overwhelm the community with mass votes, and he does not care whether the articles are actually notable. These bad faith votes should be striked out and ignored. The user should be warned to stop, and if he does not, he should receive escalating blocks. James500 (talk) 23:10, 2 June 2026 (UTC) I am striking my comment because it is not applicable to the new keep !vote. James500 (talk) 00:21, 3 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
(Copying my reply from the talk page): Hi, thank you for the message. I read pretty quickly and I've been off work due to an injury for the past few days, so I've had a lot of time on my hands and have been lurking on the AfD page. I can leave more detailed justification of why I feel the article fails to satisfy WP:GNG if that's preferred - I'm relatively new to Wikipedia so I wasn't sure what the norm was regarding how much to write for the reasoning. Appreciate the advice, I'll be more careful when reading. I'll also review the AfD votes I've left. Felinaex (purr / pawprints) 23:59, 2 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Found this The Herald article which should be WP:RS, "Yukari Fresh make perky indie electro-disco records...There are all sorts of Shibuya-kei offshoot labels now which aren't even in Japan. Like Bungalow in Berlin, who are internationalising Shibuya-kei by mixing on their roster Japanese groups like Yukari Fresh with German and French acts, like Stereo Total or the Momus-produced Laila France, who have been "Japonified"."
This Neojapanisme interview with the artist, though I guess it's primary source? Not sure how much it can be used.
This Sabukaru article that's more about general shibuya-kei but it does mention the artist once.
I'm a bit busy to edit the article myself but I'll put them in the talk page if anyone wants to add them in. Felinaex (purr / pawprints) 00:11, 3 June 2026 (UTC)[reply]
