Usage

This template should be placed at the top of categories used in the maintenance of Wikipedia, rather than as part of the encyclopedia — for example, at the top of Category:Wikipedia administration.

Parameters

The following descriptions assume the template is transcluded on a page in the Category namespace.

‹See TfM›|container=true/yes Causes the template to add the page (the category) to Category:Container categories and include a {{Container category}} style message. To inhibit self-categorisation, set ‹See TfM›|container_category=no.
‹See TfM›|tracking=true/yes Causes the template to add the page (the category) to Category:Tracking categories and include a {{Tracking category}} style message. To inhibit self-categorisation, set ‹See TfM›|tracking_category=no.
‹See TfM›|purpose= To add a short explanation of the tracking category after the message, use ‹See TfM›|purpose=Short explanation. The ‹See TfM›|tracking= parameter must be set to true or yes to display.
‹See TfM›|desc= Text supplied will be placed below the template with a boldfaced header of "Description:". The word "Description" can be replaced by something else, using ‹See TfM›|alt=Something else.
‹See TfM›|hidden=true/yes Causes the template to hide the page (the category), add it to Category:Hidden categories and to include a {{Hidden category}} style message. Using ‹See TfM›|tracking=false/no or ‹See TfM›|tracking=true/yes, in addition, will give slightly different messages in the box.
‹See TfM›|empty=true/yes Includes a {{Possibly empty category}} style message. In addition, to add a short explanation of the empty category after the message, use ‹See TfM›|empty_text=Short explanation.
‹See TfM›|polluted=false/no Exclude categories that legitimately contain pages in both the (Main) namespace and the user namespace from Wikipedia:Database reports/Polluted categories.
‹See TfM›|shortcut1= Enables a shortcut to the category to be displayed by the template.
Multiple shortcuts are supported: from ‹See TfM›|shortcut1=, up to ‹See TfM›|shortcut5=.

Aliases

  • The first positional parameter is recognised as an alias for ‹See TfM›|desc=. If both ‹See TfM›|desc= and the positional parameter are present, the positional parameter is ignored.
  • The parameter ‹See TfM›|1= is recognised as an alias for ‹See TfM›|desc=. If both ‹See TfM›|desc= and ‹See TfM›|1= are present, ‹See TfM›|1= is ignored.
  • The parameter ‹See TfM›|ALTTEXT= is recognised as an alias for ‹See TfM›|alt=. If both ‹See TfM›|alt= and ‹See TfM›|ALTTEXT= are present, ‹See TfM›|ALTTEXT= is ignored.
  • The parameter ‹See TfM›|description= is recognised as an alias for ‹See TfM›|purpose=. If both ‹See TfM›|purpose= and ‹See TfM›|description= are present, ‹See TfM›|description= is ignored.
  • The parameter ‹See TfM›|shortcut1= is recognised as an alias for ‹See TfM›|shortcut=. If both ‹See TfM›|shortcut= and ‹See TfM›|shortcut1= are present, ‹See TfM›|shortcut1= is ignored.

Description: Category for articles (and other pages, such as portals and mainspace-intended templates) tagged as needing or more citations for verification, using the {{Citation needed}} template. Does not include discussion pages tagged with {{Talkfact}}.

}}
This is an administrative category, used for maintenance of the Wikipedia project. It is not part of the encyclopedia and contains non-article pages, or groups articles by status rather than subject. Do not include this category in content categories (except for eponymous maintenance categories).
This is a tracking category. It builds and maintains a list of pages primarily for the sake of the list itself. They are not part of the encyclopedia's categorization scheme.
This category tracks pages that use {{albumchart|Billboard200}}.
  • This category is hidden on its member pages—unless the corresponding user preference (Appearance → Show hidden categories) is set.
  • These categories can be used to track, build and organize lists of pages needing "attention en masse" (for example, pages using deprecated syntax), or that may need to be edited at someone's earliest convenience.
  • These categories also serve to aggregate members of several lists or sub-categories into a larger, more efficient list (discriminated by classifications).
Code
{{Maintenance category
|empty=true
|empty_text=This category is tracking [[academic journal]]s by the {{para|frequency}} parameter of their {{tl|Infobox journal}}. This category should ideally be empty, but will be populated when non-standard {{para|frequency}} parameters are used.
|alt='''Alternative text''':
|desc=Usage with the {{para|alt}} parameter.
}}
This is an administrative category, used for maintenance of the Wikipedia project. It is not part of the encyclopedia and contains non-article pages, or groups articles by status rather than subject. Do not include this category in content categories (except for eponymous maintenance categories).
Administrators: Please do not delete this category even if it is empty! This category may be empty occasionally or even most of the time. This category is tracking academic journals by the ‹See TfM›|frequency= parameter of their {{Infobox journal}}. This category should ideally be empty, but will be populated when non-standard ‹See TfM›|frequency= parameters are used.
Alternative text: Usage with the ‹See TfM›|alt= parameter.
