Usage
This template should be placed on a user page only by the concerned user, or at their request.
The syntax for this template is simple: {{Retired}}
The default text under the black box is "This user is no longer active on Wikipedia." Use |alttext=yes to change this to "This user has permanently retired from editing Wikipedia."
To add "as of" and a date to the text under the black box, use |date=. Any format is acceptable (the parameter accepts any text). You cannot exchange the final period (say, for an exclamation mark).
To add a reason for your retirement, use |reason=. This text is appended to the text under the black box, after any date supplied.
Change the template's main text from the default "RETIRED" by adding an unnamed parameter: {{Retired|WITHDRAWN}}. The letters of this word are always centered and spaced. The spacing does not change, so a long parameter will cause the text to break over two lines.
Formatting parameters are available: |border=, |bgcolor= and |fgcolor=. These format the border and set the background and foreground colors of the box, respectively. Parameters follow the CSS standard. The defaults are |border=solid 2px gold, |bgcolor=black and |fgcolor=white.
For bot accounts, use {{Retired|bot=yes}}. This changes the default main text to "DEACTIVATED". Adding the unnamed parameter will still override this.
To opt out of newsletters and mass messages when you retire, use |mms=no. This will add your user page to Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery.
Retiring implies that you will not resume editing at any later date. If there is any significant chance that you might eventually return, then it is preferable to announce an indefinite {{Wikibreak}}. Editors should promptly remove this template from their user pages if they resume editing for any reason. If still editing on rare occasions, use {{semi-retired}} in reference.
Unlike for missing and deceased Wikipedians there is no category populated by this template; see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025 August 21#Category:Retired Wikipedians.
