This template uses Lua:
  • Module:Contentious topics/talk notice (sandbox)

This template is used on the talk pages of pages covered under a contentious topic to notify editors to take care editing the page.

The template requires you to declare what contentious topic the page is covered under, by specifying a #decision code. If the page is covered by more than one contentious topic, you can include multiple parameters (for example, {{Contentious topics/talk notice|a-i|blp}})

You should place the template at the top of the talk page, below the header (if used) but above all other templates.

Anyone may place a contentious topics talk page notice, but only administrators may specify restrictions.[1]

The page it is placed on must be within the topic area of the contentious topic. Keep in mind that many topic areas are "broadly construed". Clarification of whether a page is in a topic area can be requested at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Clarification and Amendment.

Use

You may use this on the article talk page.

{{Contentious topics/talk notice|code1|code2|code3}} etc.
{{Contentious topics/talk notice|code1|code2|brief=yes|1RR=yes|0RR=yes|BRD=yes|placed-date=June 1, 2025}}

Examples

The default is a detailed message:

{{Contentious topics/talk notice|tpm}} gives:

The contentious topics procedure applies to this page. This page relates to post-1992 politics of the United States and closely related people.

Editors who repeatedly or seriously fail to adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, any expected standards of behaviour, or any normal editorial process may be blocked or restricted by an administrator.

Alternatively there is a more concise, bold-print message:

{{Contentious topics/talk notice|tpm|brief=yes}} gives:

The contentious topics procedure applies to this page. This page relates to post-1992 politics of the United States and closely related people.

If restrictions are noted, the appearance changes:

{{Contentious topics/talk notice|tpm|BRD=yes|1RR=yes}} gives:

Warning: active arbitration remedies

The contentious topics procedure applies to this page. This page relates to post-1992 politics of the United States and closely related people.

The following restrictions apply to everyone editing this page:

  • You must follow the bold-revert-discuss cycle if your change is reverted. You may not reinstate your edit until you post a talk page message discussing your edit and have waited 24 hours from the time of this talk page message
  • You may not make more than 1 revert within 24 hours (except in limited circumstances)

Editors who repeatedly or seriously fail to adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, any expected standards of behaviour, or any normal editorial process may be blocked or restricted by an administrator.

If an article has sanctions but doesn't fit into one of the above topic areas, this template is unsuitable. Use {{Gs/talk notice}} might be applicable in some cases.

Section

To indicate that a contentious topic applies to only part of a section:

  • The |section= parameter to indicates that every single CTOP in the banner only applies to a section. |section=yes indicates that they apply to an unspecified part of the page (useful if it is obvious), or |section=<a description='' of='' which='' parts='' are='' covered='' by='' the='' CTOP=''> will include that description in the banner itself. The description will be the same for every topic. This is most useful if there is only one CTOP in the banner.
  • To indicate that a specific topic only applies to part of the article, add a |<code>-section=yes or |<code>-section=<a description='' of='' which='' parts='' are='' covered='' by='' the='' CTOP=''> parameter. For instance, {{contentious topics/talk notice|covid|covid-section=yes}} or {{contentious topics/talk notice|covid|covid-section=the person contracting COVID}}.
  • When CTOPs only apply to a section, any inherent restrictions (e.g. the extended-confirmed restriction or word limits) are enabled by default, but can be explicitly disabled with markup like |ECR=no.
  • To customize restrictions on a section-by-section basis, use |other=, |other2=, |other3= etc. to spell out exactly what parts are covered and what exactly the restriction is.

Categorisation

The template places the page into Category:Wikipedia pages about contentious topics and the following restriction-specific categories unless |nocat=yes is included. nocat should only be used for examples.

  • 0RR: Category:Wikipedia pages subject to a zero-revert restriction
  • 1RR: Category:Wikipedia pages subject to a one-revert restriction
  • BRD: Category:Wikipedia pages subject to an enforced BRD restriction
  • ECR: Category:Wikipedia pages subject to the extended confirmed restriction (and potentially Category:Wikipedia pages subject to the extended confirmed restriction related to the Arab-Israeli conflict)
  • consensus-required: Category:Wikipedia pages subject to a consensus required restriction
  • other: Category:Wikipedia contentious topics with custom restrictions

Five different errors are tracked in Category:Wikipedia pages about contentious topics with errors:

  • Category:Wikipedia pages with contentious topic restrictions without a placed date (1,362) – add the appropriate |placed-date=
  • Category:Wikipedia pages with an invalid contentious topic code (0) – {{Contentious topics/list}} contains all valid contentious topic codes
  • Category:Wikipedia pages about a contentious topic mislabelled as protected (41) – remove the |protection= parameter
  • Category:Wikipedia pages about contentious topics without a code (0) – provide at least one contentious topic code
  • Category:Pages using contentious topics/talk notice with unknown parameters (1) – remove the unknown parameters; the WP:SORTKEY is the unknown parameter's name, which can help identifying the culprit

Categories are defined in Template:Contentious topics/Category database.json
