Talk:Wives and children of Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone

"Mary, d/o Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone m. Con Og O'Donnell"?

edit

Found this claim on one of the documents posted on Francis Martin O'Donnell's website.

This Con Og is brother of Niall Garve and son of Conn, and all of them have wikipages of their own.

On the face of it, it seems to conflict with statements that Hugh O'Neill's daughter Mary married Brian Mac Hugh Og MacMahon or Ross MacMahon. From what I can tell, those claims seem to have a solid basis. Perhaps Con Og O'Donnell represents a first marriage? He did die rather young, probably under 30 years of age.

It wouldn't be unheard of for a magnate of this era to have multiple, similarly named children, but I don't believe there is any evidence for this in any account of the will of Hugh O'Neill that I have read.

From what I can tell, Francis Martin O'Donnell says this document was prepared in the 1940s by the then-Chief Herald of Ireland, though on what basis I do not know. Maybe his book elaborates on this claim or this document? I don't have a copy, so I don't know. JackMason1 (talk) 15:55, 23 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for bringing this up. I will add it into the page. Currently I am thinking of trimming the "wives and children" section on Tyrone's solo page and moving it to here, so that the solo page doesn't get too long. There is a lot of inconsistent and diverse information out there on Tyrone's children and I hope it can be cleanly collated here.
Re Francis Martin O'Donnell's book, I have wanted to utilise for some time now but it is frankly too expensive for me to afford. I can only find physical copies of it to buy, not digital copies. FMO also seems to take the dating in Irish manuscripts at face value. Hopefully a digital version of his book releases some time or another. SkywalkerEccleston (talk) 01:17, 24 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
