Follicular and luteal phase length variation

edit

The recently added (and reverted) comment, "length of follicular phase is more variable than the luteal phase so the length of the menstural cycle in days minus 14 gives the most likely day of ovulation is true. The length of the follicular phase can vary by many weeks - it is more variable than the luteal phase. And subtracting 14 days from menstruation is a more accurate estimate of ovulation than assuming ovulation on day 14 of the cycle. Nevertheless, a luteal phase is considered normal anywhere from 10-16 days, so even retrospective day-counting estimations are frequently going to be off by several days.

I support the removal of the sentence, because it's not useful in the context of that paragraph. Sources could easily be found to support its assertions, but that wouldn't make it any more relevant to this article. Lyrl Talk C 01:17, 22 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Mature Graffian follicle.jpg

edit

Image:Mature Graffian follicle.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

How long does a ovulation take?

edit

The duration of ovulation should be mentioned in the introduction. --93.223.20.79 (talk) 23:02, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I saw somewhere on WP that it was estimated that the follicle took ~210 days (!!) to go from inactive phase to ovulation (in the human female). (Unfortunately, there's so many articles on human reproduction that I'm not going to go back and try to locate where I saw it.)(I've seen nothing that indicates HOW the 'awakening' follicles are chosen nor HOW the ones that DON'T ovulate (that cycle) are prevented from doing so.) Confusing!

edit

Confusing! 1. "The follicular phase lasts from the beginning of menstruation to the start of ovulation." I don't know what this means! From the "beginning" of menstruation ??? Do you mean Menarche??? or do you mean from the beginning of that particular menstruation cycle??? I suppose you mean from Menarche - turns out that's a word and hey, maybe we should use the best words for the concept we're trying to convey. It would seem OBVIOUS that this would be a good place to note (if I'm correct) that that means the follicular phase lasts up to 35-40 years.(I leave the math to others - I assume it's from beginning of Menarche to the end of Menopause...) 2."Estrogen levels peak towards the end of the follicular phase, around 12 and 24 hours." Does this mean "at around 12 to 24 hours FROM the end of the phase OR "for around 12 to 24 hours near the end of the phase"?? In case the difference is not clear, duration (length of a time span, in this case a peak in [estrogen]) is different from its time of occurrence (near the end of the phase). I note that the accompanying diagram shows [estrogen] to have nearly reverted to baseline by the time of ovulation. Generally, spikes like this are characterized by width at half-height (as well as maximum [estrogen] level) but I don't know what those skilled in this discipline do. Anyway, CLEARLY it can't be "around 12 AND 24 hours." It's not twin peaks. It can be "around 12 to 24 hours" but better would be "between 12 and 24 hours before ovulation.~2026-92463-4 (talk) 12:18, 25 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

I should also mention I read somewhere on WP that the follicle takes ~210 days to mature, meaning the phase lasts between ~200 days to 40 years.~2026-92463-4 (talk) 12:20, 25 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
