Article title should be “J Robinson” (legal name), not “Jay Robinson”
editI would like to request a review of the article title for J Robinson. The subject is widely and consistently identified in reliable sources as J Robinson, not “Jay Robinson.” Examples of reliable sources using J Robinson include: University of Minnesota M Club Hall of Fame profile https://gophersports.com/sports/2023/12/11/sports-m-club-spec-rel-hof-jrobinson-html National Wrestling Hall of Fame biography https://nwhof.org/hall_of_fame/bio/1352 Star Tribune coverage https://www.startribune.com/j-robinson-fired-by-university-of-minnesota-after-30-years-as-wrestling-coach/392637101 https://www.startribune.com/untitled/601649580 Daily Gopher obituary https://www.thedailygopher.com/college-wrestling/40135/former-gopher-wrestling-coach-j-robinson-dead-at-79 By contrast, SportsReference appears to be the primary source using “Jay.” Multiple institutional and biographical sources use “J Robinson,” suggesting this is not an abbreviation but his actual given name rather than a shortened form. Given Wikipedia’s convention of using the most common name found in reliable sources (WP:COMMONNAME), it seems appropriate to move the article title to J Robinson. I’m requesting editor input on whether a page move to J Robinson would better reflect the sourcing consensus. ~2026-19845-10 (talk) 23:35, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
- I attended the J Robinson 28 day camp at the U of M campus in summer 2006. In a speech there, J explained that on his birth certificate his first name is as: "J (I.O.)". The "(I.O.)", he explained, stands for "Initial Only". The comment I am replying to is correct; the subject of this article's name is "J", not "Jay". ~2026-20757-27 (talk) 00:24, 4 April 2026 (UTC)

Jay Robinson (wrestler) → J Robinson – Please place your rationale for the proposed move here. ~2026-19845-10 (talk) 20:07, 13 June 2026 (UTC)
Jay Robinson → J Robinson
I propose moving this article to J Robinson per WP:COMMONNAME.
The subject is consistently identified in reliable sources as "J Robinson" rather than "Jay Robinson." Examples include:
- University of Minnesota M Club Hall of Fame profile:
https://gophersports.com/sports/2023/12/11/sports-m-club-spec-rel-hof-jrobinson-html
- National Wrestling Hall of Fame biography:
https://nwhof.org/hall_of_fame/bio/1352
- Star Tribune:
https://www.startribune.com/j-robinson-fired-by-university-of-minnesota-after-30-years-as-wrestling-coach/392637101
- Star Tribune:
https://www.startribune.com/untitled/601649580
- Star Tribune:
https://obituaries.startribune.com/obituary/j-robinson-1093766584
- Daily Gopher obituary:
https://www.thedailygopher.com/college-wrestling/40135/former-gopher-wrestling-coach-j-robinson-dead-at-79
These sources use "J Robinson" as the subject's name. By contrast, "Jay Robinson" appears to derive primarily from statistical databases such as Sports Reference.
Additionally, official court records relating to Robinson's litigation against the University of Minnesota identify him as "J Paul Robinson" rather than "Jay Robinson," which is consistent with the widespread use of "J Robinson" in reliable sources. https://mn.gov/workcomp-stat/2001/Robinson-06-02-01.htm
Additionally, discussion on this talk page includes testimony from a former attendee of Robinson's wrestling camp indicating that Robinson stated his legal first name was simply "J" ("J I.O." for "Initial Only"), suggesting that "J" is not an abbreviation for "Jay."
Under Wikipedia's article title policy and WP:COMMONNAME, the preponderance of reliable sources appears to support the title J Robinson.
