No licensing issues with Popeye?
editI've heard from multiple sources that Shigeru Miyamoto did not create Jumpman, Donkey Kong, or Pauline because of licensing issues regarding the Popeye property; he did it for technical reasons, rather than trademark finagling with King Features. Nintendo was still pumping out Popeye-licensed product at the time they created Donkey Kong. This also seems to line up with court records from the infamous Nintendo v. Universal lawsuit, where evidence and documents from the making of the arcade game were presented before judge Robert W. Sweet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsCWPserdrs NintenBOUND (talk) 01:50, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
Mario was not the main character
editThe character in the 1981 Donkey Kong game wasn't Mario, it was actually Jumpman, a carpenter. Shouldn't this be reflected in the article? MrCiteYourSources (talk) 13:12, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- Jumpman is Mario. His name and occupation were changed with future titles. This is reflected in the lead:
As Mario, (known at the time as "Jumpman") the player runs and jumps on platforms...
Loytra (talk) 11:54, 20 December 2024 (UTC) - Not even in future titles. He is identified as Mario in all marketing materials for the original Donkey Kong from the moment it launched in the United States. He is only referred to as Jumpman in the instructions on the cabinet. Indrian (talk) 04:17, 21 December 2024 (UTC)
TAS and new levels
editToday, youtuber Kosmik released a video explaining how, with a tool-assisted speedrun, he was able to get past the killscreen and then beat a few more levels before it once again becomes impossible. I realize that this is a primary source; how much coverage does it need before we can include it? Thanks. (not logging in) 184.146.235.184 (talk) 16:21, 1 February 2025 (UTC)
- When a WP:RS covers it. Shouldn't take too long. The game and Kosmic are big enough for someone to cover the story.©Geni (talk) 20:40, 1 February 2025 (UTC)
- I'm curious with something like this, which has a lot of detail that could take up a lot of room in one section, and is pretty notable especially in certain communities, at one point would you make another Wikipedia page just about the kill screen? Looking at the guidelines I'm kinda confused, WP:SUSTAINED and WP:NTEMP seem to directly contradict each other? Anyway I assume it depends on how in depth the event is covered, but maybe something like this would never have its own article and would always be included in another? - In article terms its about two sentences. Something along the lines of "the kill screen has been passed in tool assisted runs but the methods are not thought to be plausible for unassisted humans.".©Geni (talk) 08:03, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
- That makes sense. You're an admin. Do you know why WP:SUSTAINED and WP:NTEMP seem to directly contradict each other? Or just more generally if I'm confused about a guideline, would that be something I would ask about on that guidelines talk page? Ezra Fox🦊 • (talk) 20:52, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
- The answer to "why do two guidelines on Wikipedia seem to contradict each other" is "Wikipedia is a massively decentralized project run largely by hobbyists". DS (talk) 03:51, 5 February 2025 (UTC)
