POV dispute regarding video/ID verification

edit

Info about the new photo verification had been moved from the history section (more noticeable) to a sub section under Criticisms and controversies (less noticeable). I argue this is biased and taking the side of discord, because:

A. Less noticeable.

B. Sweeping the whole thing under the guise of 'child protection'.

The controversy here is never about child protection, as seen in source , people are threatening to leave due to privacy concerns.

I propose leaving a short line in the history. And either moving some part of the age verification controversy to under privacy, or splitting the whole thing to a new section. I'd like to hear what everyone thinks before moving forward to editing. Anothercat613 (talk) 09:24, 11 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

The history section is mostly around the business elements of Discord and not features or changes to the software. Until we know if a larger impact to the number of Discord users, the age verification makes far more sense in the criticism section, and becayse they are defaulting accounts to teen, it is a child safety issue though obviously crosses over with privacy. They are theories that discord dud this as part of prepping for IPO which then maybe make sense to include there, but nothing absolutely stated that yet. Now if this does cause a massive loss of users once it happens, to affecting the business in a major way, then we can look to move it back to history. But right now, it has T happened yet so it's just criticism. Masem (t) 16:09, 11 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Now that a few days had passed and more info had came out, I believe it have enough impact to be worth greater mention (like the article's current state) because:
1. Many news had reported on strong backlash from users and report of slur of nitro cancellation
2. Discord’s global head of product policy acknowledged Discord expects "some sort of hit" to user numbers
But if anyone believes otherwise, happy to discuss Anothercat613 (talk) 14:15, 14 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
I did expand out a section on Age Verification, as this already had been done for UK and Australia users. I still dont think we have any idea of numbers of users leaving the service yet, and that likely won't be known until they actually launch this, but they did respond to try to assure users that they expect the auto verification by profile will get most users. Edit Request for extending the amount of Platforms listed

edit

Discord is available on PlayStation and Xbox with limited functionality, mainly voice chat. I think it’s justified to list them on the page, as long as their limited functionality is clearly noted in the sidebar and the (Top) section to avoid being misleading. It might even be worth going further by specifying in the history section when and which features were implemented on Xbox and PlayStation.

Monetization

edit

Alongside Nitro, Discord has now implemented a currency called Orbs that users can gain from completing Quests (watching advertisements and playing game promotions). The orbs can be used to pay for profile decorations and Nitro credits.

Citation doesn't support the claim

edit

It is primarily used by gamers, but the share of users interested in other topics is growing.[11]

Adam Reiss; Zoë Richards (May 19, 2023). "Pentagon leak suspect Jack Teixeira ordered to remain in jail as he awaits trial". NBC News. Archived from the original on September 6, 2023. Retrieved June 10, 2023.

This source links to NBC news article about a US Air National Guardsman being on trial for leaking classified military documents. It doesn't say anything about share of users interested in non-gaming subjects is growing. Even if the implication was that share of users who are interested in leaking classified military documents is growing, the article doesn't really support that claim either, since we don't know whether Teixeira is a gamer from the link. ~2026-24912-35 (talk) 04:52, 23 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
