American Athletic Conference → American Conference – As many probably know by now, the American Athletic Conference has officially dropped the "Athletic" from their name as of July 21. The page title should obviously be changed to reflect this, but the question is whether or not a disambiguation should be put in the title. The other "American Conferences" are the American Conference (NASL) and the American Conference (CIF). I would argue that this American Conference is much more notable and recognizable than those other two, as the NASL one hasn't existed for 45 years and the other one is for California high school football, so we do not need a disambiguation for this. If it is deemed necessary for one though, I would propose American Conference (NCAA). Red0ctober22 (talk) 16:17, 21 July 2025 (UTC) —Relisting.TarnishedPathtalk00:30, 29 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oppose move. The common name remains American Athletic Conference. This may be looked at again in the future, but right now it's far too soon. O.N.R.(talk)21:00, 21 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I don't really think WP:COMMONNAME applies to an article like this, because if we went strictly off of the common name, it would be either "The American" or the "AAC". Nobody calls the SEC the Southeastern Conference, yet that is the name of the page.
I could still think of examples though where the official name is applied over the common name. For example, "Sears Tower" is more commonly used, yet the page title is called Willis Tower. Red0ctober22 (talk) 01:21, 22 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Support - Waiting to move the name would be tedious for the guaranteed present (and future) identificiation of the conference. Opposing such a move for the purpose of its common name would only delay the inevitable outcome of its page move, per WP:COMMON. I believe a move to the American Conference would not need disambiguation in the title, but rather a heading linking to its disambiguation page. Vataxevader (talk) 22:58, 21 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Support - The conference identified themselves as simply the "American Conference" on their website. Furthermore, they've identified themselves as the "American Conference" across their social media accounts. I don't understand how it is too soon considering that the conference has rebranded seemingly everywhere as the "American Conference." Also, while it was called the "American Athletic Conference" while it still went under that title, calling it "The American" or the "AAC" was just as popular if not more so. If they announced that the rebranding would take place at some point in the future, say a month or so away, then keeping the name "American Athletic Conference" would be appropriate, but it seems like the conference has almost fully shifted over to the new branding. Support this is the new COMMONNAME moving forward. The web devs maintaining American's website is just slow to update while ESPN has already picked up on the change Admanny (talk) 20:07, 24 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Actually the website itself is updated as of today, it is still showing up on Google with the old name, but it probably takes a few days for Google to process that. Red0ctober22 (talk) 20:21, 24 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I don't think it needs disambiguation. The other two "American Conferences" are a high school athletics conference in northern California and part of a defunct soccer league from 40 years ago. Maybe a header linking to the disambiguation page would be appropriate, but the Southeastern Conference isn't called the "Southeastern Conference (athletics)" simply because a high school league in Massachusetts shares the same name. VermontPowderKing (talk) 15:15, 25 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
While indeed there are many conferences in America, there is quite simply no need for disambiguation in the title. If you search up "American Conference" on the internet, the first result is for the American Conference which is the subject of discussion. By your logic, every athletics conference would need to be labeled with an (athletics) at the end, which is unnecessary. The Southwest Conference has a header for disambiguation, which I regard as appropriate, but saying that the American Conference needs to have disambiguation in the title is a non-issue for a major Division I conference. VermontPowderKing (talk) 14:48, 29 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oppose assumed that it isn't primary topic. I would agree to move the article as American Conference (NCAA) per nom's alternative suggestion, as for most people know the "American Conference" without any context may be literally mean an conference/meetings/summit held or organized by the United States regardless of type. 103.111.102.118 (talk) 03:48, 29 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
At this point, I think it is best to at least get it moved to the correct name, as it appears the consensus is there for at least that. I propose renaming it to American Conference (NCAA) for now, then we can give it time to see if it eventually prevails and doesn't require a disambiguation. I just don't like it sitting here with the incorrect name for this long. Red0ctober22 (talk) 01:54, 3 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
It's been less than a week as of writing. Yes I agree the name should be changed but no hurry at the moment. Season's still weeks away. Admanny (talk) 22:42, 4 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
