Article 2 of Japanese copyright law defines that a work is eligible for copyright when it is a production in which thoughts or sentiments are expressed in a creative way and which falls within the literary, scientific, artistic or musical domain. Japanese courts have decided that to be copyrightable, a text logo needs to have artistic appearance that is worth artistic appreciation. Logos composed merely of geometric shapes and texts are also not copyrightable in general. See COM:CRT/Japan#Threshold of originality for more information.

According to articles 51, 52, 53 and 57 of the copyright laws of Japan, under the jurisdiction of the Government of Japan works enter the public domain 50 years after the death of the creator (there being multiple creators, the creator who dies last) or 50 years after publication for anonymous or pseudonymous authors or for works whose copyright holder is an organization.
Note:The enforcement of the revised Copyright Act on December 30, 2018 extended the copyright term of works whose copyright was valid on that day to 70 years. Do not use this template for works of the copyright holders who died after 1967.
Use {{PD-Japan-oldphoto}} for photos published before December 31, 1956, and {{PD-Japan-film}} for films produced prior to 1953. Public domain works must be out of copyright in both the United States and in the source country of the work in order to be hosted on the Commons. Note that this work might not be in the public domain in countries that do not apply the rule of the shorter term and have copyright terms longer than life of the author plus 50 years. In particular, Mexico is 100 years, Jamaica is 95 years, Colombia is 80 years, Guatemala and Samoa are 75 years, Switzerland and the United States are 70 years, and Venezuela is 60 years.
