Summary
| DescriptionThe coastal region of South Africa (iss071e580719).jpg |
English: iss071e580719 (Aug. 30, 2024) — The coastal plains and Cape Fold Belt of the Western Cape, South Africa, in winter, with Cape Town and False Bay situated at the top right of the image. These are pictured from the International Space Station as it orbited 265 miles above. In the foreground the green wheat producing region of the Swartland is evident, and beyond the Cape Fold Belt, that of the Overberg. Cape Agulhas near the top border, defines the meeting point of the Indian and South Atlantic Oceans, while a billow of cumulus cloud at top right reveals air convection over the warm Agulhas Current. Sediment plumes are visible at the mouths of the Berg River in St Helena Bay at bottom left, and the Diep River in Table Bay. Cape Columbine, named for one of many local shipwrecks, is near the southern boundary of the image. The cold and nutrient-rich Benguela Current sweeps northward past this perilous point, as the sediment plumes also indicate. The Cape of Good Hope juts out into the South Atlantic on the far right. The vicinities of these three capes are protected by a nature reserve and two national parks respectively. |
